Empty shelves in supermarkets

I must admit I’ve not really been out much these past couple of years due to health reasons but have in the last month been to several different supermarkets.

what’s the reason behind the cardboard advertising boxes where items should be on the shelves in Sainsburys and why in Asda are some areas of the store just empty of food, the biscuit (8 in a packet type snack bars) just empty, nothing, last two weeks exactly the same.

Is it delivery driver issues, or can they not get these products? Or the war in Ukraine etc etc, or is this all part of the Covid pandemic.

Not in my local Asda or Aldi, both fully stocked!

Maireas · 13/08/2022 14:38

Where do you live? All the supermarkets near me are fully stocked. No empty shelves at all.

Sapphirensteel · 13/08/2022 14:39

Mix of all of those.
Shortage of drivers, shortage of grain from Ukraine , supply chain problems due to Brexit. This was local Lidl a couple of weeks ago. This morning I tried Waitrose but again, lots missing.

I don't think it will get better any time soon. Theres industrial action planned at major UK container ports this month, so that will have a knock on effect towards the end of the year easily.

Its amazing how much stuff we buy comes from Ukraine and Russia isn't it?

Maireas · 13/08/2022 14:44

Wow! That's absolutely nothing like where I am, so it's obviously regional. M&S foodhall, Waitrose and Sainsbury's all fully stocked last two days.

KangarooKenny · 13/08/2022 14:45

No problems when I’ve been shopping.
Maybe they’re making room for the Xmas goodies due out any day now.

lilroo87 · 13/08/2022 14:46

It's like that in a lot where I am but I live in Cornwall and it's always the same at this time of the year unfortunately due to the influx of people

Lavendersquare · 13/08/2022 14:47

The shelves have been like this on and off for over a year, never completely fully stocked regardless of when you visit.

It's due to a combination of factors, Brexit - things take longer to reach stores and British fresh produce isn't being picked, lack of HGV drivers again Brexit but also retirement and lack of new drivers, supply chain and logistic industries in chaos due to Brexit and lack of staff. High fuel costs also mean companies are not making as many journeys so stock doesn't arrive daily.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 13/08/2022 14:47

No problems here. They might be having to make room for seasonal items or be having a refit in the near future. Could be a shortage of staff or distribution problems as pp have said.

Dartmoorcheffy · 13/08/2022 14:48

I'm in Devon and it's quite bad here

Horcruxe · 13/08/2022 14:48

I wouldn't know.

I've been avoiding leaving the house the last few days

IcedOatLatte · 13/08/2022 14:57

Im quite surprised to hear that some places are fully stocked, for months now there have been empty shelves in all the supermarkets near me

Not all the same thing at the same time but always something

Are there really places that haven't suffered from shortages of cooking oil for example?

Yesterday in Tesco there was no stock for any of the aisle end freezers ,they'd been filled with all kinds of random food.

Blaming Brexit three times in one paragraph.

Must be a record 😂

mydogisthebest · 13/08/2022 15:00

I live in East Midlands and the supermarkets here have been like that for months.

Morrisons seems to be one of the worst. About a month ago they had literally no salad items at all.

Also shops like Wilkinsons and Home Bargains have almost no shower gel, hand wash, washing liquid, washing up sponges. Home Bargains last week had almost no crisps, no squash, no bread items and hardly any dairy products

Maireas · 13/08/2022 15:00

Well, Brexit or not - there are no shortages at all where I live, so it must be something quite different.
It's still a land of plenty.

cosyteapot · 13/08/2022 15:01

I'm also in Cornwall but our supermarkets are fully stocked :) haven't seen any issues.

They are making space for Halloween goodies though!

OhFatty · 13/08/2022 15:03

This was in a Morrisons yesterday afternoon

AmbushedByCake1 · 13/08/2022 15:04

It's like this by me too OP. Lidl was like it's been ransacked and Tesco's also bad, and there's various products I've not been able to get for weeks.

OhFatty · 13/08/2022 15:05

And last time we went into Lidl (Hampshire but s different part to where Morrisons is), they had an almost completely aisle where biscuits and crackers go

BigButtons · 13/08/2022 15:06

It’s been like this since the first pandemic. You never know what random items won’t be there each time you go in. Where I am( SE) there are loads of gaps in shelves.

lissie123 · 13/08/2022 15:08

Loads of stock missing in my local Waitrose today due to supply issues.

PeekAtYou · 13/08/2022 15:11

I don't shop at the supermarkets you do but my local ones display the merchandise so it looks like there aren't missing products.
you can buy everything but if you want a specific product say cherry washing up liquid, you might have to compromise and go for lemon instead.

Spanielsarepainless · 13/08/2022 15:17

One Lidl has huge gaps, another five miles the other way is fully stocked. Sainsbury's utter crap as per usual, looks like something from the Soviet era.

Ilikewinter · 13/08/2022 15:19

The only thing that had been ransacked in Tesocs today was bottled water, pratically the whole aisle was empty - and we arent in a water shortage area either

EmptshelvesUK · 13/08/2022 15:21

Having spoken with friends who have been out a lot more than me it’s not a recent thing.

We are in SE, Morrisons I think was the best stocked of the ones I went to recently but I also read they’ve knocked Sainsburys into third place on the most expensive list of supermarkets going in at number two with Waitrose being number one.

I did however bag some toys in Sainsburys at excellent prices for the grandkids birthdays and his nibs favourite tipple was on offer too.

I only went out for a cabbage 🤣
