Why do people look down in those with low skilled jobs?

Why are people like this towards them? I get the impression that they think they're too dumb to do anything else. Most people I've seen are quite clever and could much better jobs.

Or, they just want a stress free job, and an easy life.

It’s an interesting thing..the cause of stress at work

many studies have been undertaken to understand what causes it. A very famous one was conducted with civil servants. The hypothesis was that those at the “top” with more responsibility would be most stressed. They weren’t necessarily

what they found was people experience most stress were those that had no control over their work.

people at the top sometimes have all the control over their work…they are responsible for all the decisions affecting their work. Ok, when shot hits the fan then the stress can be enormous, but if things are jogging along then little stress is experienced.

whereas those that are working at bottom of heap and are just issued orders, no autonomy over what they do, why and when often experience a low level persistent stress which is way more damaging in the long term.

stressful jobs also include roles at all levels where you have no control over the work you are going to be doing from one minute to next in a high stakes situation. Think A&E, police, fire officers- literally within a second your adrenaline is going full belt and need to make quick actions and decisions. That adrenaline rush is also cause of stress if it is repeated very frequently.

so interesting…lower paid roles do not equate to less stress as a default - it can be the other way round.

But what exactly is low skilled and who do people think they are?

I pay my cleaner £15ph and she's a marvel.
I pay my hairdresser £180 for a cut, colour and blowdry - she works from home now so limited outgoings. She works around clie to now so mostly appointme to are after 6 or on Saturdays. What she does would cost me £300 in London. If my hairdresser does 6/7 clients a week that's £1200 a week! I'd call that pretty smart. She's going back to college in the autumn.
Similarly my tree surgeon charges £500 a half day and the chaps who come to mow the lawn and trim the hedges get £90 for three hours.
I absolutely take my hat off to the ladies in the supermarket who I think do a hard physical job and we always have lovely chats.

However, contact to my experiences in the NHS where I have been told in the last 12 months "I'll assume you are retired as you are over 60" and then spoken to as though I were intellectually challenged; upon asking a reasonable question, haven broken bones (I have read that naproxen can interfere with bone union but it is more effective than 30/500 co-codamol, is it OK to take it?) "If it deals with the pain it works and you need to get your head out of the Internet because it's full of crackheads" and recently when I asked for a biopsy report I was told I couldn't have it because patients don't understand reports.

Personally I think the UK's biggest employer looks down at every other human being regardless of what they do and assumes everything is dim and does not deserve respect. It correlates with all the woes above from NHS cleaning and caring staff.

This is a great summary of my current position!

I took on a lower paid role on the assumption that I would be less stressed whilst I'm doing some studying.

But actually, when I was in the SLT at my last company, I had the power to remove every last thing that made me unhappy from the workplace.

Now I have to sit there watching them make ad decision after bad decision that doesn't actually affect them. Maddening, and causes me grief every day.
