Do you say fizzy drink or juice?

My husband says juice to refer to sodas. I had only ever heard people use the word juice to refer to fruit juice.

He says it depends on where you live.

What do you say?

I always said fizzy drink, when living in Scotland it took me a while to cotton on that some people say ‘juice’ for fizzy drink!

‘Fancy a juice?’
‘Aye, I’ll take a can o’ Diet Coke’

Justleaveitblankthen · 12/08/2022 23:22

Juice is from fruit (or veg)
Irn Bru etc can be called pop, never juice.
We never had juice - always pop.
We didn't used the term Squash when I was growing up, though I remember the term from Robinson's Lemon Barley Water that I think sponsored the Tennis 😀

Can of juice
D'lootin juice

Soft drink - carbonated drink like Coke
Juice - juice from squeezed fruit
Juice drink - juice from squeezed fruit, diluted with water
Cordial - fruit juice syrup diluted with water

Juice is juice, squash is the stuff you dilute and fizzy stuff is called by whatever type it is in this house.

Exactly this! Fizzy is Coke, Lemonade, Fanta etc but we say the name of the drink not 'fizzy'.

Juice is fresh (or in a carton fresh anyway) fruit juice.

Squash is diluting cordial stuff - Ribena, Robisons etc.

palygold · 12/08/2022 23:34

Minerals for fizzy drinks I'm guessing comes from 'mineral' water? I did ask them but they'd always said it and didn't know where it originated exactly.

DappledThings · 12/08/2022 23:35

Minerals in NI. I only lived there a few years and it was one of the few things I absolutely had no idea what I was being offered when at a play in a small town there were "crisps and minerals" available at the interval.

Irn Bru is Scottish therefore it is ALWAYS juice.

Is he Scottish by any chance?

My thoughts exactly!

MissMaple82 · 12/08/2022 23:37

Pop where I come from

meandmyadhd · 12/08/2022 23:37

Frizzy drink - soda

Juice - fresh fruit juice

Cordial - the juice you dilute with water

My dad also calls milk cow juice

IcedOatLatte · 12/08/2022 23:39

Have you just met your husband today?

How can you possibly not know that Scots don't understand how to name drinks properly?

OldWivesTale · 12/08/2022 23:39

Juice is any fruit juice
Pop is anything fizzy
Squash is the one you dilute with water.

DuchessOfSausage · 12/08/2022 23:42

We don't have carbonated soft drinks and usually refer to fruit juice as [name of fruit] juice.

I asked DH if I used to call soda, fizzy juice, He confirmed I did.
( I'm a long exiled Scot)
We have a way with words I reckon.

MajorCarolDanvers · 12/08/2022 23:46

In Scotland- 'Juice' is any soft drink. It covers fizzy, fruit, cordial, squash.

Unless you are in Glasgow where fizzy drinks are called 'Ginger'.

takingmytimeonmyride · 12/08/2022 23:46

Juice - from a fruit.

Fizzy drinks, or soft drinks - though I tend to call them by their brand name, like coke, Fanta, or their flavour, like lemonade.

Squash - diluted stuff.

Cloud juice - water Grin

MayISuggestSomeThickCutSteakChipsToGoWithThat · 12/08/2022 23:47

Pop

😂 It's not always clear to non-Scots, I'll give you that!

Fizzy drinks - 'ginger'
Robinsons/Ribena - 'Diluting Juice'
Fruit juice - 'juice'.

Since moving to England, I've tried to make things a bit clearer, but there's always been that bit of confusion. No way can I bring myself to say 'squash' or, worse, 'cordial' 😂

Weesweetiewife · 12/08/2022 23:52

Ginger

mummalog · 12/08/2022 23:55

Fizzy pop for carbonated drinks. Juice to be is fruit juice, like pure stuff. Then dilute is what I say but most people would say squash or juice for that

scotstarstrikestwo · 13/08/2022 00:12

Scottish here too and ita juice

Also call squash 'mixy up juice'

cherish123 · 13/08/2022 00:22

I say fizzy drink.
Juice is fruit juice.

FannyFifer · 13/08/2022 00:38

It's all juice to me.
