Anyone know how I can open a sharps bin lid ?? Brand new and I've accidentally closed it 😩

Spudina · 12/08/2022 18:07

I don’t think it’s possible OP. It’s a fail safe so the sharps don’t spill out.

RedSnail · 12/08/2022 18:07

You can’t reopen a closed sharps bin

LemonySippet · 12/08/2022 18:20

You can't, but you won't be the first to have done it accidentally, go back to the ward/pharmacy that issued it and they'll give you another one. Good luck!

LemonySippet · 12/08/2022 18:21

Oh, and take the closed one with you, they'll want it back. You can't dispose of it in your normal household rubbish.

thunderonlyhappenswhenits · 12/08/2022 18:24

Oh no really thought there might be a way 😩 soo annoyed there is literally only two syringes in there !!

You can't and you won't be the first or the last to do it, I've known it done on the ward by experienced nurses so don't worry. Take it back and they'll swap it for you.

thunderonlyhappenswhenits · 12/08/2022 18:44

Okay I will do. Needed a new one for ages and finally got it then I go and close it, what a prat!

You can't. As DH and I discovered on day 1 of my 6-week course of fragmin post-c section. He had to go and get another box. Happy times.

JustTheOneSwan · 12/08/2022 20:13

I did this and used every utensil in the house but couldn't open it.
The chemist was very understanding about my mutilated box and cut thumb.

Depends what sort it is. Mine is a circular bucket type. I managed to get the lid off using a butter knife under the rim and then from the inside could slide open the ‘door’. Mine was the first bin I ever had….won’t make that mistake again-especially as I had to beg to be prescribed one as ‘did I realise that my diabetes is very expense to treat.’ I didn’t realise the surgery pharmacist paid for my treatment herself!!!

Yeah mine is the bucket one! Could you lock the door again after or was it broken then ?

Please don’t so that. If you mess with the integrity of them you risk them coming open later down the disposal line and someone else getting a needle stick injury. As a health worker that’s had a needle stick injury that’s it something you should inflict on someone. Once they are shut, they are shut. Just ask for a new one.

thunderonlyhappenswhenits · 13/08/2022 13:12

@Spudina no I'm going to leave it. They have the guards on them that pop up once you've injected so they're pretty safe, will just have to keep them in a Tupperware until I can get a new one

I have managed to repoen one, is the tab still outwards, if so lever it up.

Peders · 14/08/2022 07:01

I've got a 4 litre sharpsafe sharps bin (prescription supplied by the hospital) It just has a flap in the lid that allows entry of used equipment.

Can you contact your prescriber to ask for something similar.
