Italy holiday - Naples and Florence - advice needed!

Hi all, DP and I are considering a holiday in Italy either end of Sept or early October. 3 nights in Naples, then get the train to Florence and 3 nights there (or the other way around). Main focus for us is food, then walking around and general sightseeing. Will probably look to stay in B&B and eat out every night

Advice gratefully received for both cities about
Where to stay
Where to eat
What to do
What to avoid
Expected weather
Other tips

Thanks!

I don't know Naples, but in Florence I can recommend the following for food:

  • Procacci for the best mini truffle sandwiches

  • La Giostra - very popular (think masses of pics of the owner with various celebs) but very pretty, and the Stracciatella di Burrata is to die for.

  • Bucca dell'Orafo - a real taste of Florence. No English menu, so make sure you have Google translate, but fabulous.

  • Golden View on the other side of the Ponte Vecchio - not cheap, but delicious food and a fabulous view, make sure you get a table by the window.

  • Villa San Michele - in the hills outside Florence. Amazing views, but pricey.

  • I’Pizzacchiere - great pizza

  • You really also must go to the food market which is amazing.

Re sightseeing, you see so much just wandering around, but the Uffizi and the Duomo are really worth it, but I would recommend pre-booking your tickets to avoid the queues.

DP and I have just been to the Amalfi Coast, we flew into Naples but had been told that it really isn’t very nice and to be fair, the few hours we spent there didn’t persuade us otherwise. I’d get a train from Naples to Sorrento or Amalfi and spend the three nights there (with maybe a night on Capri if you go to Sorrento)

You'll probably like the James May Italy programme that's on Amazon Prime. He definitely went to Naples (and Pompeii) as well as Florence.

We went to Naples and unless you are in to history there is not a lot there and all the restaurants we ate at were only ok.

Florence is nice, I really enjoyed the Uffizi but was really surprised by how much I enjoyed seeing the statue of David. Wasn't at all what I expected.

My husband is from The Amalfi coast so we travel there regularly. We have never stayed in Naples as there are so many lovely places along the coast:
Amalfi
Ravello (above Amalfi) fantastic views across the Amalfi coast.
Scala
Maiori
Minori

Great way to travel along the coast is by the water taxis as the roads can get very busy. Although the 'Amalfi Drive' is quite an experience!

I've only been to Florence once on a day trip & it is beautiful, lots to see & great for leather goods.

Enjoy! 🇮🇹

Naples is the most fascinating beating heart of Italy and world renowned for food - birth place of the Margherita pizza !
Eat all the pastries, mozzarella, cured meats, fresh fish, gelato and fresh fruit, granita
Visit the incredible number of churches with amazing works of art
Spaccanapoli, subterranean naples, mount Vesuvius, the beautiful vistas, trains to Pompeii, sorrento, boat trips to capri, ischia and beyond
The shopping!
Can't believe some of the responses on here 😲

My family are from near Naples and in all the years I've flown out to Naples I've never ever wanted to stay there. It's not nice. Maybe a day trip but no more. Visit Pompeii and the Amalfi coast!

I spent a night in Naples before continuing on to Meta. Honestly, I never want to go back in my life. Least favourite place I’ve ever been.

We went to Naples a couple of years ago and loved it. It's less touristy than other parts of Italy, which I see as a plus, and which you can see from the snobbery here!

We also had some of the best food in Naples, I never remember names of places unfortunately though. Everything we ate in Naples we loved.

Did a day trip to Florence on a different trip and honestly just walking around you see a lot. The food we had there was nice too.

I loved Naples! The old town at night was alive, passionate, buzzing - such a fab vibe. Food wasn't great but it was cheap. We stayed here. Brilliant views.
