7 cities shortlisted to host Eurovision

They are Birmingham, Leeds, Glasgow, Liverpool, Manchester, Sheffield and Newcastle.

Which do you think will 'win'?

Which would you like to win and why?

Part of me thinks it won’t be Brum because they’ve just had the commonwealth games. But then again they do have the NEC

crumpet · 12/08/2022 09:06

I think Birmingham or Glasgow will win. I’d be happy with either, or Liverpool. Love visiting Glasgow and Liverpool, and live not too far from Birmingham 😄

Norachance · 12/08/2022 09:07

I hope it's Liverpool. It's a brilliant city with a great music history.

Birmingham did an amazing job of the games, so I can see that being a big plus for organisers. Plus it's so central.

It'd be nice for Leeds tho, they don't get much.

SleepingStandingUp · 12/08/2022 09:09

Agree its unlikely to be Brum unfortunately as we've just had the Games so night seem a bit "favouritism*". Would love it tho cos its my local venue 🤣

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 12/08/2022 09:11

I saw a news report the other day that there isn't a single venue in the UK big enough to host this which isn't already booked for the requisite period, so a lot of it will depend on whether the venues can persuade the existing bookings to re-schedule and make way for Eurovision. Don't know how easy that will be as I assume in most cases tickets will already have been sold.

mnahmnah · 12/08/2022 09:13

I want Liverpool because it’s easiest for me to go to it and it’s an amazing city.

But Leeds would make me happy too because you don’t see them hosting much. Can they handle the volume of people, flights, accommodation though?

Cyclingforcake · 12/08/2022 09:14

It was in Birmingham last time. I think either Manchester (as a feel good factor due to the history) or Glasgow. But I’m hoping for Leeds because thats my best chance of getting there.

Mumdiva99 · 12/08/2022 09:16

When I looked at the list of events in the arenas I though the Birmingham ones looked easiest to move.....so that would be my guess.

(I know they had it before, but it's central, next to the airport, parking, additional space for the media city they need.)

KirstenBlest · 12/08/2022 09:22

Liverpool

Abraxan · 12/08/2022 09:22

Dd is a huge Eurovision fan and is really keen for it to be in our home town, Sheffield.

But tbh she'd be happy with Liverpool (near her university), Newcastle (near our family and her friends) or Manchester/Leeds (not far from here.)

She's keen to be able to go but no idea how feasible that's going to be re tickets.

Glenthebattleostrich · 12/08/2022 09:25

I live on the border of west and south Yorkshire so looking forward to the 'fun' swipes Leeds and Sheffield will be making at each other!!

I'd love Newcastle to win, the Sage is a beautiful venue! And I could go home for the weekend to celebrate it 😁

Arenanewbie · 12/08/2022 09:28

It’s exactly my way of thinking. It’s also easy to get to for us, however the others are not too bad. Birmingham and Glasgow are a bit further so would rather not them,

PanicAtTheBigTesco · 12/08/2022 09:32

I think Manchester/Glasgow make a lot of sense as the BBC have bases there.

However I live just south of Leeds so Leeds or Sheffield would both be great for me! As others have said neither of them regularly get big events so it would be nice for them to get it, Leeds is city of culture 2023 so I think that swings it slightly more towards Leeds out of those two options.

Ifailed · 12/08/2022 09:33

Whoever gets it, the organisers are looking for a financial contribution, which means local Council tax payers.

Arenanewbie · 12/08/2022 09:33

@Abraxan we are a bit similar. It would be an absolute dream for DD to come but I don’t know how realistic it would be. I’ve read that they open not only main performances but also some sort of day jury performances to the public, so it’s more then just a few.

BarbaraofSeville · 12/08/2022 09:34

DP works behind the scenes in the music industry and said that Leeds arena isn't big enough for what's needed.

Thinking about all the multiple acts, entourage, plus central location, Birmingham might be the favourite.

waltzingparrot · 12/08/2022 09:41

I'd give it to Liverpool or Newcastle. Birmingham has just had its moment on the world stage. Let someone else have it. It's definitely levelling up in action though.

Embarras83 · 12/08/2022 09:42

Birmingham has more venues of a large size then any others. The one touted for this is Resorts World. But they have Utilita (NIA). Having attended the Games I feel Birmingham should win! They have everything in place!!

perimenofertility · 12/08/2022 09:43

Manchester has the biggest arena I think? More people = more money.
I thought it would be London because of easy transport links for uk and Europe.

LookItsMeAgain · 12/08/2022 09:45

I think there should have been representation from each of the home nations - I'm really surprised that there isn't a single venue in Wales listed amongst the 7 shortlisted ones.

I heard that too @Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g . They have to factor in that the competing countries arrive at least a fortnight before the actual events as there is lots and lots of media to be done so these competing countries and their entourage need to be hosted somewhere (so there is hotel accommodation to look for, for 40 countries or so), then they have to set up the staging (so there is all of the people involved in that need hosting too), then they have the first semi-final where 10 countries get through but I think 13 or 14 leave at that point (but do they actually leave, or can they hang on until the whole Eurovision is done), then 2 days later is semi-final #2 where a further 10 qualify. It's a logistical nightmare I'd imagine.

Fair dues to the UK for stepping up here. It seems to have become really expensive. I remember that Eurovision was once hosted in a converted stables in Cork (that was the year Niamh Kavanagh won and Sonia came second with "Better the Devil You Know")

Minecraftatemychild · 12/08/2022 09:48

I reckon they’ll pick Glasgow because it has decent airport, won’t get insanely hot and as a distraction from the politics up there.

perimenofertility · 12/08/2022 09:52

I just read that Manchester has the highest Ukrainian population in the UK so that seems fitting, since we are hosting it for Ukraine.
I just hope the tickets are not too expensive, I'd love to be in the audience!

BadNomad · 12/08/2022 11:04

Glasgow would be good. It would be nice to show the world part of the UK that isn't England.

poorbuthappy · 12/08/2022 12:11

Excellent to see the United Kingdom represented.
