TWSBI fountain pens

Does anyone have a TWSBI fountain pen?

DS16 and I both like the look of them, and the idea of refilling from an ink bottle instead of using plastic cartridges, but I wondered how good they were as an actual pen.

I was also wondering if the filling was much of a faff/messy - DS16 tends to rush through life, leaving a trail of destruction behind him, and so I'm not convinced he and bottles of ink will go too well together...

And obviously we'd have to be organised enough to refill in the evenings - I'm not carrying a bottle of ink to work in my handbag, and DS will definitely not be taking one to school!

I've never heard of the brand before. You could get a very nice Lamy pen for half the money.

Most fountain pens can use bottled ink with the right adaptor, there’s no reason to get hung up on this brand if it’s just the refilling that’s attracting you.

I love them. I get mine from Cult Pens. They are very easy to fill. I have TWSBI and Lamy and love them both. Not too expensive either. I match my ink colours to the pen colours too.

Sorry to hijack the thread a wee bit, but I have a Lamy pen that I love, but I'm really struggling to get it to write? It's as if the ink cartridge isn't flowing properly? I've taken it apart and cleaned it thoroughly three times, I've changed the ink cartridge and it's just not working!! Any tips for a fountain pen newbie?

I know you can use an adaptor with most pens, it's just that DS in particular liked the look of the TWSBI.

HIs current fountain pen is a Lamy, and the nib has always been a bit scratchy (to be fair it was probably their cheapest, most basic model) so he fancies a change now.

AKnitter, does your Twsbi write nicely? I guess it does if you say you love it.

@RockaLock Yes it writes beautifully. I have a fine nib. They are so easy to fill too and I love that you can see the ink in the chamber.

I have just bought one: broad nib and piston fill. The fill mechanism is really straightforward to use and it writes beautifully.

Bought from Cult pens and was about £20 so comparable to Lamy pens.

I have a TWSBI fountain pen quite a few in fact. I love mine. In my opinion they are much better than the Lamy pens. TWSBI started off as a manufacturer of nibs for expensive fountain pen brands, so they definitely know how to make a good nib

I have a TWSBI Eco with a 1mm stub nib, which writes really nicely. It’s not practical for normal everyday writing for me (I got it for doing calligraphy with shimmer inks) so I’ve actually just (yesterday) ordered another with a normal medium nib. I love the demonstrator look, and it’s easy to clean between inks. It’s due tomorrow, so I’ll update on the quality of the nib.

You probably won’t need to fill daily - the Eco at least has a massive barrel; probably twice the size of my fountain pens with smaller traditional converters, and even they last a few days - and I do a lot of writing.

Thank you for all the replies, it's been really helpful. Good to hear that so many of you are happy with yours - looks like we need to go and chose a couple!

Are you using the proper lamy cartridges? I found out the hard way that only the lamy ones work🤪

CarlottaFerrari · 13/08/2022 21:50

My Cultpens order finally arrived today, and I can confirm, the TWSBI medium nib is as smooth as butter to write with.

caringcarer · 13/08/2022 21:57

Number 1 best fountain pens are Waterman. You can get plastic cartridges or ink chamber and most come with both. I have seven different sets of Waterman fountain pens and gel Ink pens. So smooth and even flowing.

I love mine - I've got one with a jade green cap/end bit, and a Fine nib. It writes beautifully with smooth ink flow, and you really don't need to refill it that often. Am eyeing up another, again from Cult Pens that great enabler of stationery addicts.
