Collapse of normal life

It feels to me that this is what is beginning to happen. Spiralling bills that surely only the well off can pay, shortages of things we all took for granted (2 of my mum's regular medications are out of stock, no chemicals for the local swimming pool, things opening for a few hours instead of all day (post office, banks etc), NHS on its knees, many other services just not running as they should). Plus the sodding infernal heat and drought this summer.....

And yes I know we are luckier here in the UK than many, many others countries.....but I just feel there is no turning back to life pre-covid.

I agree it is worse than the 1970s.

In the 70s you could get an ambulance, you could access social housing, you got an internationally leading education.

Services are absolutely fucked now.

I think it's dramatic to say life will collapse. Previous generations weathered much worse storms and we will weather this one.

A lot of the country voted for Brexit and successive Tory governments (I didn't) so some of this current struggle feels self-inflicted. The turkeys voted for Xmas.

When you think of what we lost economically with Brexit, it's truly astounding but the media narrative has long moved on and they have COVID and the war to conveniently blame for all woes now.

I live in another EU country. We have also had Covid and some effects of the war in Ukraine. The only things I have noticed is we do have rising food and fuel prices. In July inflation was at 8.7% and in June it was 8.2 % in comparison to the same months last year. But everything still seems to be 'working'. Healthcare, schools, transport, stock in shops, maintenance of parks and facilities, opening hours have resumed to pre-Covid etc...
I think this is a combination of low taxes (for what the population needs in services etc...) and .... brexit.

Been telling/warning people for several weeks.
People only now beginning to cotton on.

No, it’s the entire Ponzi scheme of capitalism and the consequential boom and bust economy it dictates that’s doing that.

No it is not made up.

Like everything else, that is coming to light more as well now.

Soon there will be many threads about it.
Well I say soon.
Another year maybe?

ImWell · 11/08/2022 19:24

neveradullmoment99 · 11/08/2022 18:48

This 100%
The Tories need to be removed.

If that’s what you want you need to have a word with Labour and their supporters. It’s them that need the votes, but they don’t seem keen to do anything to get them.

If anything most supporters, with their sneering at those who switched to the Conservatives in 2019 are doing their best to drive them away.

But in the knee-jerk response to completely deny these conspiracy theories the media are also claiming the great-reset itself is a conspiracy theory.

Give it say another year, and the media will be looked upon as having played a great big part in it all.

lightand · 11/08/2022 19:27

whalleyt · 11/08/2022 17:51

what is the aim of the great reset?

will find you a quote later from a sky reporter in australia. he hit the nail on the head a while back.

entropynow · 11/08/2022 19:27

Soproudoflionesses · 11/08/2022 16:15

I wouldn't have dignified that with an answer. You don't owe anyone am explanation as to why you chose to be a sahm.

My dd's school would be most grateful for glue sticks etc.

Bet it was fun completely owning the snotty "well you're not as generous as you think you are" poster
@Boybandfacedfannyfart: an apology would seem to be in order.

fakenamefornow · 11/08/2022 19:29

Surely this is just the sunlit uplands we were all promised?

Can you vague that up for us? Not quite enough tin foil in your hat to get all the secret messages through, I reckon

gotelltheoldmandowntheroad · 11/08/2022 17:28

Agenda 2030 and the fourth industrial revolution, or great reset. There's a book by Klaus Schwab or you can read all the documents online if you so wish. We are embarking on a new financial system without money/currency.

This isn't pulled out of my arse, it's from conferences held that you can view online. They aren't made up, they are real.

Not looking at something doesn't make it not true.

It is being talked about openly.

It is the public themselves who are not listening. Or refuse to listen. Or who bury their heads in the sand. Or are in denial. Or whatever.

And are led to do so by MSM.

lightand · 11/08/2022 19:30

well not so much led exactly.

Labelling something conspiracy theory immediately makes 90% of a population look away.

Elodie09 · 11/08/2022 19:30

@Blossomtoes I agree wholeheartedly with you. One massive difference between now and the 70's is the lack of decency and integrity in the majority of politicians we have. There is widespread corruption, deceit and lies everywhere you look. They go to Uni to do PPE and then aim for the highest office they can get to without giving a care for society as a whole and without questioning what the best MP's can actually achieve. Added to this the removal of the right to free speech, being able to strike when staff are absolutely at the end of their tether because NO ONE IS LISTENING and so much else. This is why , in my opinion, now is so much worse.

lightand · 11/08/2022 19:32

Wait a year,. Or maybe two in some peoples' cases.

Wonderful to see this thread.
People are waking up.
Great to see.

I might have to move to Gransnet

I can't fathom all this takeaway malarkey.

I am the Four Yorkshiremen and the Dowager Countess all rolled into one.

but seriously...holidays? Takeaways? As a norm? I don't get it.

pp mentioned govts telling us to spend. I don't recall this but it's not a message I'd listen to.

Lol, I know how you feel @LynetteScavo . I'd mention the deprivation of my childhood, growing up in a poor family in the 50s/60s, but it sounds a bit like the Monty Python "Yorkshiremen" sketch and people would either take the piss or think I was making it up.

Having said that, I feel that things are on the brink of falling apart. Shortages in shops, public services struggling to meet need, the physical fabric of our environment falling into disrepair, the seeming impossibility of getting through to companies and services on the phone, the cost of energy, climate change and drought.

Whether human society will be able to bring us back from the brink, I have no idea and, at 67, I hope I will be gone before the shit really hits the fan. It's scarey and I feel sorry for those younger than me, or who have children's futures to worry about.

I certainly have no faith in the current government's ability to sort it out, and I wonder if it's "sortable" at all, really.

Blossomtoes · 11/08/2022 19:34

One massive difference between now and the 70's is the lack of decency and integrity in the majority of politicians we have.

Absolutely. I detested Thatcher with a passion, I’d take her over this lot any day.

loulouljh · 11/08/2022 19:35

it is great to see people finally waking up..this is all planned, all by design.

threadneedle · 11/08/2022 19:37

@StonewallsPyrrhicvictory I was about to write exactly what you did. I'm in an EU country and when I listen to R4 or Sky news I have to remind myself that the seeming implosion that's happening in the UK is not happening where I live. Or in the other EU countries where family members are living.

We have lived through Covid, and the problems being caused by Russia. But life here is pretty much back to normal. Food is a bit more expensive and energy prices will rise over winter but nothing like the UK predictions. Services are back to normal and there are no shortages, although I no longer shop online from the UK due to taxes and duty and many small businesses have found alternative suppliers for items previously imported from the UK.

Years of Tory government are coming home to roost, but surely the elephant in the room, that the UK media refuse point blank to acknowledge, is Brexit?

pilkywilkymoansalot · 11/08/2022 19:38

What the fuck are Labour going to do about it.. Back the unions increase wages then increase prices - great! Streets are over run with weeds - better than the indiscriminate council spraying - sort your own frontage out set an example. Parks full of glass pick it up, get some of the parents of the culprits involved. Do something don’t be shy, make a few stews, have a cold shower, brew your own put some socks and a jumper on, we’ve all got too fat and lazy - just do something.

lightand · 11/08/2022 19:40

whalleyt · 11/08/2022 15:39

I don't think we ever came out of the 08 cycl

Can was kicked say a lot of people.

And United States printed money. Loads of money.

Blossomtoes · 11/08/2022 19:40

What the fuck are Labour going to do about it..

Whatever it is it’ll be a massive improvement on this government’s pitiful efforts.

Boybandfacedfannyfart · 11/08/2022 19:42

Behave @entropynow now. Of course I’m not going to apologise for pointing out hypocrisy. Said poster wanted her altruism medal for feathering her daughter’s best with pritt-stick and sequins - meanwhile - as she was at GREAT lengths to tell us, she lives in a mixed community (klaxon alert - poor people!) who I'd wager a greggs bap - would rather have a school uniform and find a pritt stick.

but you go right ahead and throw her a party for putting value beans in the food bank and sellotape in the craft cupboard.

Surlybassey · 11/08/2022 19:42

This forum is badly lacking in economics in my opinion.
Always has been.

Always feels like there cant be many who know much about economics on this forum.
