Collapse of normal life

It feels to me that this is what is beginning to happen. Spiralling bills that surely only the well off can pay, shortages of things we all took for granted (2 of my mum's regular medications are out of stock, no chemicals for the local swimming pool, things opening for a few hours instead of all day (post office, banks etc), NHS on its knees, many other services just not running as they should). Plus the sodding infernal heat and drought this summer.....

And yes I know we are luckier here in the UK than many, many others countries.....but I just feel there is no turning back to life pre-covid.

anyone remember the Guardian reporting this back in may 2019 and people called Corbyn a communist;

Labour will announce plans on Thursday to seize back control of Britain’s energy network from private shareholders in an effort to fight climate change and end fuel poverty.
Jeremy Corbyn and the shadow business secretary, Rebecca Long-Bailey, are expected to say that heat and electricity should be a human right for all and nationalisation of the network is key to decarbonising the economy.
Under Labour’s plan, companies that control the UK’s £62bn energy infrastructure – the pipes and cables that supply homes and businesses with gas and electricity – would be taken back into state control soon after a Labour election win.

I almost feel sorry for all the working class Tories that believed in Boris and Jacob and are now facing choices to either heat or eat and thanks to spiraling interest rates cannot simply remortgage to survive.

@OldPot
Haven't read the full thread, but the thing which dismayed me earlier this week is that there will be a shortage of pain killing medication for expectant mothers in labour. This is going back to medieval times and beyond. Regarding the title of this thread though, what is normal life after the Pandemic, now in it's third year?

vera99 · 11/08/2022 23:09

Well, Prince Andrew was a brave helicopter pilot in the Falklands but has been bailed out to the tune of £12 million pounds by his mum to avoid sexual grooming charges. There are plenty of unsung heroes who do live-saving work and aren't paid 'royally' for the privilege. I receive nothing from the public purse so have a right to anonymity which I am exercising.

Anyway, this is a serious thread derail (started by me sadly) so I'm leaving it at that.

As an ardent Republican I subscribe to Tony Benn's 5 rules ;

“What power have you got?”
“Where did you get it from?”
“In whose interests do you use it?”
“To whom are you accountable?”
“How do we get rid of you?”

@Qik give the Royal worship a rest

No royal worship here.

But I do like to pull people up on facts. And irrelevant soundbites.

Cheap shot bringing Prince Andrew in to defend your attack on William. You know that of course.

juggleit · 11/08/2022 23:16

@Boybandfacedfannyfart
your comment was incredibly rude about the generous donations given to the poster’s school. It’s lovely to still see generosity however mediocre you deem it to be.

Presumably you give away thousands of your income to charity each year.

NFLwidow · 11/08/2022 23:18

its a fucking outrage. My friend works for shelter and got a call from a guy who cannot afford to to watch tv anymore, has one cup of tea and two showers a week. This is before the increases are implemented. Even if the press is scaremongering, the rises are just not affordable. Come October we will all have lights on from 4pm and be panicking about the cost. It’s dystopian

I don't feel sorry for them. They're the reason we're in this mess. Do people never learn?

GreenLunchBox · 11/08/2022 23:27

Just looked back at Corbyn's 2019 manifesto. The proposals all sound great.

There is nothing wrong with pointing out the behaviour of Andrew.

GreenLunchBox · 11/08/2022 23:30

The party will nationalise the so-called big six energy firms, National Grid, the water industry, Royal Mail, railways and the broadband arm of BT.

I wish 😭
We've now got shit in our rivers, some kids couldn't access online learning during covid and you now need to sell a kidney to afford a return ticket from London to Manchester. Corbyn was right.

It’s fact.

You know @whalleyt having read your posts you and I probably have a great deal in common. But there was no reason to cast a cheap shot out like you did. I am not a royal worshipper. My post about Prince William was to bring some balance. If you want to find out more then Google is that way…..

What comment about Prince Andrew’s behaviour and character is fair to pin on William?

Go back and read the posts.

NFLwidow · 11/08/2022 23:42

I don’t give a fuck about prince andrew.

i care about people who will be choosing whether To eat or heat their house. I care about whether schools will have the budget to give out hot meals to the poorest children in society. I care about whether the families of those who are double incontinent can afford to run their washing machines and clean their loved ones with hot water. I care about nursing home residents and their families whose fees will rocket. I care about business who will also suffer and staff who will lose their jobs.

where are the government and where are COBRA? Where is Chris Witty with his slides. This crisis will affect everyone as winter comes in. They need to act now! It’s a fucking disgrace that no one is doing anything.

I did weep when we got the results of that election. We had a chance but some people couldn't see it.

The Tories have run this country into the dirt. Just something simple like booking a driving test is impossible. You try to book and it says no tests available. Then you have to buy an expensive app if you want to have any hope of finding a test date. The disaster capitalists are making a fortune from our misery

I am entitled to post out incorrect facts. I think you started to derail it by throwing the ‘royal worshipper’ comment out which as I have pointed out was also incorrect.

Qik · 12/08/2022 00:00

Point out.

NFLwidow · 12/08/2022 00:03

There were so many people who believed red top headlines such as ‘BOJO BREXIT BOAST Boris Johnson says Vote Leave’s Brexit campaign bus £350million-a-week vow should have been £438million’ . And so many ignorant people are who think those seeking asylum are handed everything on a plate.

Brexit is not the sole cause for the state we are but it’s contributed and anyone who disagrees is naive.

people who who don’t understand the manifesto of the party they vote for and the impact of their votes should not be allowed to vote.

I agree. You can't:
-get a GP appt
-get a dentist appt
-get a passport
-book a driving test
-get an ambulance
-get a police officer to attend a crime scene
etc. etc. etc. It is bloody awful.

The deliberate choices of this Tory government.
