A day to fill in Manchester

I'm going to be in Manchester all day on Saturday thanks to the train strike.
Any ideas on how to fill my day? I'll be walking or using public transport.
I've visited the Industrial Museum and the Central Library.

Thanks!

Is the Metrolink still running?
Imperial war museum of the north, Lowry centre and walk round Salford Quays / Media City. there's a small shopping outlet there too.
Trafford Centre if you like shopping.
Tram to Altrincham and then bus or walk to Dunham Massey (National trust stately home and deer park) if you want to escape the city, or there's places like Fletcher Moss and Sale Water Park you can get to by bus or tram.
John Rylands library
Manchester art gallery and Whitworth art gallery
Theatre or cinema

Both excellent places. Grin

But assuming the trams are running on Saturday and it’s sunny I’d take myself off to Salford Quays for a stroll along the canal. You may or may not want to spend an hour inside Imperial War Museum North on a hot day (think it’s air conditioned) but the waterside is a nice place to be. Don’t know if there’s anything appealing on at The Lowry or around Media City. (Google.)

Afterwards, or instead, a wander down Oxford Road (up to you whether you take in the Art School and Manchester Museum) to the Whitworth Gallery. IMO the loveliest building in the whole city. Fine for lunch in the wonderful glass walled cafe, (though may be busy) but the gallery itself is just incredibly beautiful and engrossing. And there’s usually music being performed as well.

In this weather I’d avoid the Northern Quarter - it’ll be heaving.

LOL great minds @MuddlerInLaw 😆

City are playing at home so expect trams etc to be very busy.

Whitworth is a good shout and easy to walk to.
IMW north is good but if theyve not got any extra exhibitions on won’t take long to get round.
Tram to didsbury village, walk round Fletcher moss and lunch could be pleasant.

emmathedilemma · 11/08/2022 11:55

or you could do something like get your nails or hair done, a couple of the big hotels have spas if you like that sort of thing.

GuyFawkesDay · 11/08/2022 11:57

RHS garden if you like that sort of thing?
Lowry and war museum north etc
Trafford centre
Man United tour??!!!!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 11/08/2022 12:01

John Rylands gallery

Central library - the reading room is gorgeous and cool

Tram to New Islington and a little canal walk to Pollen bakery for the best flat white and gorgeous cakes and pastries

A mooch around Selfridges and Harvey Nics

Lunch at Maray - and at least one cocktail

MuddlerInLaw · 11/08/2022 12:03

Oh, yes! RHS Bridgewater ought to be glorious on a hot Summer’s day. Really must try to get there next time I’m in Manchester.

Glitterbiscuits · 11/08/2022 12:51

Some good ideas here, thanks!
Hadn't considered the football crowds so I'm glad of the tip off.
I thought footballers took the summer off? I'm useless with anything sporty!

they're back from the summer @Glitterbiscuits i'm also out of the habit of checking for matches now i don't live in Manchester and get affected by it so often!

John Rylands Library
Police Museum
Mosley Art Gallery is close and lovely
MOSI
Whitworth Art Gallery
Costumeuseum
Manchester Museum
Manchester Craft and Design Centre

Not sure if the free bus service is running. If not might be too hot to stray far from the station. I'd do the craft centre in the northern quarter and the Mosley St gallery though I love John Rylands.

MuddlerInLaw · 11/08/2022 14:34

John Rylands is a Winter venue! Seriously. Absolutely magical around Christmas time. There are better places to be in Manchester this 🌞week.

And, having friends who live there, I can never quite see the fuss about Didsbury Village. Nice enough, but hardly worth a journey for itself.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 11/08/2022 14:37

The free bus service is running, but it seems to loop a long way round to get anywhere and was very hot.

John Rylands is a Winter venue! Seriously.
It is a nice way of spending half an hour feeling relatively cool and looking at nice things. It's not like anyone is suggesting OP should spend the whole day there.
