Who loves a good journey?

Does anyone almost enjoy the travelling more than the destination?

I love being in the car. Radio on. Sweets in the glove box. Picnic lunch in the back. A-Z on my lap when dh is driving. Looking around at people in other cars and wondering who they are and where they're going. Stopping at service stations and places of interest. Service stations give me a little buzz - seeing people piling off coaches and wondering where everyone is going, seeing people rushing in and out because they have to be somewhere - a plane to catch? To where? Kids in pjs. Those costa self service machines, the books in WHSmith.

Stopping at unexplored towns and villages just for a few minutes for a quick wander. A brief moment in time being somewhere I've never been and probably will never be again. If there's a garden centre it's a bonus. I adore a good garden centre. Dh knows he's lost me for at least half an hour if we find one.

Dh thinks I'm crackers. If it was up to him we'd drive 6 hours without stopping, but that's such a waste when there are interesting things to do on the way!

What a lovely positive thread!

I get claustrophobic in traffic so will try and remember these positive thoughts next time and take it all in

I am with you but post menopause I just fall asleep! We went to Wales from the South Coast on holiday a few weeks ago and I missed so much of the journey due to going into a really deep sleep - both ways. I was so miffed that I had missed out on good staring out of the window time!

Yes! We had a family wedding in wales recently and the best part for me was the journey up there! It was a six hour drive so lots to see and loved driving through the little welsh villages.

I love doing what you describe op. I also love service stations. Basically it meant as a kid that you were going on holiday and that's associated with excitement and fun

Love going for a drive or long journeys and if we're not pushed for time I'll always avoid the motorways just because I like to see the surroundings of the area as we're passing through. Especially residential areas looking at the gardens or seeing the wild flowers blooming at different times to back home.

Oh I love a little detour from the major road. Prefer a map for that but Dh is a lover of the sat nav which is bloody annoying when I just want to explore.

I used to love being in the back of my parents car, vividly remember them driving from north of Scotland overnight all the way down to lands end when I was about 4 or 5 . Remember watching the street lamps and the moon through the sunroof and constantly swapping seats .

I also oddly love hearing cars go past my window at night, I always wonder where they’re going at 1/2am . My bedroom used to look out over fields with dual carriageway about 3 miles away, used to sit and watch it if I couldn’t sleep . Same doing hospital night shifts on the sixth floor, used to watch the roads when 1-1 observing sleeping patients !

Service stations always bring back lovely memories, only ever used them when going on long/exciting trips away - haven’t been in one for years .

There’s a weirdly hypnotic car advert about driving in the night - Richard Burton reading a poem whilst footage of night driving … it’s on YouTube . That advert and watching time lapses of driving (Inverness to Thurso my absolute favourite - my family all from the latter) are my weirdly calming things .

With the kids, no. Without them, yes.

Sandsnake · 11/08/2022 12:54

Yeah, I like a good journey! Always have, as a kid I used to love motorway trips, just found it really exciting. Although I caveat the above with the fact that train / plane delays or traffic dampens my enthusiasm a lot. And children. Travelling with the children DEFINITELY dampens my enthusiasm!

Teoteo · 11/08/2022 13:27

I would definitely be the same if I didn't have toddlers in the back.

@Qik The A303 is my favourite! Many happy memories associated with it. There's even a rather good book about the road, called A303: Highway to the Sun (by Tom Fort) www.amazon.co.uk/A303-Highway-Sun-Tom-Fort/dp/0857203266

(There's another one that I was slightly involved with through work about another road that passes locally, the A272.. That's supposed to be very good too). www.amazon.co.uk/A272-Ode-Road-Pieter-Boogaart/dp/1843680955/ref=sr_1_1?crid=EVSB3EB37SDH&keywords=A272&qid=1660206481&s=books&sprefix=a272%2Cstripbooks%2C57&sr=1-1

A303 - Yes, I love the long stretches of road that you see in front of you, especially the hill above Wylye and when you drop down past Mere to continue on through those lush green valleys, down the long peninsula to the sea.

For me there is only one piece of music for travelling westwards and it is this

Forconfessingonly · 11/08/2022 15:10

Train for me. Love it.
