Been a housing association tenant for over 10 years.
My job went into liquidation and I lost my job so relying at min on UC

My monthly rent is £450
My housing association has turned around (new housing officer ) and said she wants £500 a month now so I'm a month in credit (new policy ) she said
I can't afford it and told her repeatedly
So I paid my £450 rent and a extra £20
I receive a text tonight saying "you paid your rent £30 short" please pay immediately

There's no other way I can say I can't afford it

What does your tenancy agreement say? Have they formally amended your tenancy?

sugarspiceplumfairy · 10/08/2022 20:17

is there someone else you can speak to at the housing association?

inpp · 10/08/2022 20:18

No they haven't amended it
I've spoke with the money team who day say same ...we now need all tenants to be a month in credit.
I feel pressured to pay but it's gonna leave me unable to pay something else

It might be because you are paying a month in arrears and you should be paying a month in advance.

Having said that they can’t evict you for a one month shortfall as the requirement is 8 weeks arrears.

Tell her that her proposed amount is unaffordable and offer a smaller amount.

See if you can apply for a discretionary housing payment from the local council; speak to the housing department and if they say they can’t help, you could also try the housing support fund which councils were given to help people affected by the pandemic and struggling financially.

*household support fund not housing

Nothing verbal is legally binding. Everything to do with a tenancy has to be in writing.
Your tenancy agreement should state when your rent can be increased and the notice period for an increase.
You are sure the person who spoke to you was an official from your HA? There are a lot of scams around.
