Am I the only one who thinks they’d be awful at taking part in a TV quiz show?

Any time I’m sitting watching the likes of the Chase or Who Wants to be a Millionaire, I always try to answer the questions before the participant on the TV answers them to see if I get them right or not.

Unfortunately, I only ever get one or two right. DH is very good at it and seems to know a lot. It is quite fun though sitting with the family trying to work out the answers.

I’d love to go on one of the shows and try and make some money but I think I’d make an absolute fool of myself!

I think I’d be quite good at the first three rounds of Pointless but would need DH for the final round as he knows loads of random tennis and rugby players nobody has ever heard of.

If I could have Gavin & Stacey as my specialist subject and was lucky with the general knowledge, I quite fancy a pop at Mastermind as well.

Eixample · 10/08/2022 19:17

I went through the mastermind audition process, got through, then chickened out. It wasn’t too bad, you should give it a go.

Ooh, what made you back out @Eixample?

It’s on my bucket list 😂. I think I’d be pretty good! I have a lot of random useless knowledge hiding in my head. My kids are desperate for there to be a child’s version of Catchphrase - they’d be the first in line

ReadtheReviews · 10/08/2022 19:43

I got up to picking a date for The Chase, but was about to give birth so didn't do it.

dontgobaconmyheart · 10/08/2022 19:48

I think it's one thing knowing the answers and another being sufficiently socially confident and not camera/audience shy that you can deliver them on the day, under the pressure of everything going on. It's not my idea of fun frankly, neither is a long day filming.

Qik · 10/08/2022 19:49

I agree OP. It sounds as if you would be.

prettyteapotsplease · 18/08/2022 14:08

I was on The Chase OP and they weed out the hesitant, unconfident, (otherwise considered televisually unsuitable) at either the telephone call which responds to your form-filling or the audition.

You're only in front of the cameras for about an hour. It's a long morning as we had to be there at 7 am - they pick you up from the hotel reception, with loads of behind the scenes stuff beforehand (including breakfast) and we were back at the railway station for the journey home at around 1.30 pm. If nowt else it's a fun experience even if you go home with just a memory which is the case for most of us.

averageavocado · 18/08/2022 14:09

I'm relatively good at most of the questions, but would totally just freeze on tv

MatildaJayne · 18/08/2022 14:10

My son was on Mastermind when he was 19. Didn’t disgrace himself but was very nervous. I think he’ll try again in a few years.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 18/08/2022 14:14

I'm extremely good at answering from the comfort of my sofa as I have tons of useless, random facts stuffed into my brain, but I know I would be rubbish in front of the camera.

MarthaMayWhovier · 18/08/2022 14:20

I have good general knowledge but I don't know if I'd be good on TV. I might freeze. My husband applied for Who wants to be A Millionaire because he'd be able to have me as a phone-a-friend.
He didn't hear back from them though.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 18/08/2022 14:20

I wish there was a non Celeb version of House of Games. I'd smash that. But I'd only want to win the Russian dolls.

TheStarsDontShine · 18/08/2022 14:22

I always wanted to go on Bullseye as the non darts player. I'd be ok on pointless as long as the last round was on darts football or snooker 😂. My knowledge of classics and literature would let me down in the earlier rounds

Nekomata · 18/08/2022 14:25

I really hate being put under time pressure, so I'd be bad at anything that's quick fire.

I'd love to do The Crystal Maze.

lurkingfromhome · 18/08/2022 14:29

I have good general knowledge but would absolutely crumble under the time pressure to answer questions really fast as my mind would go completely blank. I'm useless at the 3-in-10 on Popmaster even if it's a band I know really well, and that's listening to it on my own, not being on the actual radio! I think I'd be ok on Who Wants to be a Millionaire, though, because you can answer the questions at your own pace.

limitedperiodonly · 18/08/2022 15:14

My mum desperately wanted me to go on The Chase. I'd never heard of it before she started talking about it. Not only was it her favourite programme but Bradley Walsh lived near her and she'd regularly see him in the supermarket. She then started with: "I told Bradley about you and he said you should apply." I ignored her. In fact I didn't believe her.

One day I was in her local supermarket and saw Bradley Walsh. I prayed: "Please God, don't let my mum see Bradley Walsh" but of course, she did.

She dragged me over like her awkward child, which I was except I was 40, and introduced me to Bradley. He said: "You must be Mary's clever daughter. She's told me all about you. You should write in to The Chase. You'd be good on it." And then he winked and my mum was beaming.

I never did and I regret it now she's gone. If I'd have done it she'd have been prouder than if I won the Nobel Peace Prize even if I came nowhere

So go for it OP. Or maybe twist your husband's arm.

APJ1 · 18/08/2022 15:17

I 'd like to think I'd be as good at answering quiz questions as I am from the comfort of the sofa but I just know that my mind would go blank in reality! They could ask me the name of the Queen and it's be ".Umm.....Patricia?" .

DownNative · 18/08/2022 15:50

I'm very good at quiz shows from the comfort of my home, but would probably crumble in a to studio! 🤣

Fladdermus · 18/08/2022 15:55

Was having this discussion with DH just last night. I'm shit hot on general knowledge but don't do well under any type of pressure. So I'd be a complete failure as I'd start crying and wouldn't be able to remember my name.

DH on the other hand has so much knowledge in his brain that it's like a super computer with giant, slowly winding cogs. He's be absolutely rubbish on anything against a timer. But if there's a quiz where they'll happily wait for hours for his answer, he'd win.

Nekomata · 18/08/2022 15:56

@limitedperiodonly

I just love that story! Bless your mum!

DiddlyDoris · 18/08/2022 15:57

I'd be fairly good I think, but far too scared of being on camera, so...it's not gonna happen 😅

Keyansier · 18/08/2022 15:59

There used to be a Family Catchphrase (the original, not the one on now) and children could go on it. I only know this because a young Simon Amstell was on it and a clip was played on one of those "before they were famous" shows.

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 18/08/2022 16:02

My DM watches University Challenge religiously despite answering about one question per series correctly. I managed to astound my family by answering a full round of questions correctly and they've been in awe of my tremendous brain ever since.

(It was a set of questions on animal paw prints and I have no special knowledge but guessed a fox, a badger and a rabbit. Now if we're ever out walking they take the piss and ask me about every paw print.)

I'd never go on a live quiz and definitely not University Challenge 😂

Nekomata · 18/08/2022 16:03

I miss Simon Amstell. I wish they would bring him back.
