Hot tubs

A relative of mine bought a second hand hot tub (the inflatable type kind).

they have no idea how to clean it out, check the chemicals etc. They literally just Chuck water in and leave in it for weeks, Chuck random chemicals in it without checking anything. A while ago they had added so many chlorine tablets straight into the tub it stank of it, seemed like way too much. They don't seem to check the ph levels etc.

I don't know much about them but it doesn't seem ideal to me but whatever. I've been watching the pool guy on TikTok and picked up on a few things about ph levels etc and the test strips things don't happen there!

they keep suggesting that I bring the kids over
and let them play in it. My youngest is really sensitive skinned. I'm worried if the Chemicals are way off it will give her some kind of reaction.

relative thinks I'm being ridiculous and mean not letting them play.

My kids have a smallish paddling pool we get out and ill with water when it's hot. Because it's not a big pool, we empty, clean the pool and fill up again when needed.

i am not being ridiculous am I? Youngest is prone to irritation in her genital areas and worry a hot tub would make it flare up.

when they do clean it out it's with things you'd clean the kitchen with etc and it doesn't get thoroughly rinsed after.

I just keep thinking thrush, thrush, thrush!

am I mad?

You’re right I wouldn’t either, we hired one for a few days and did everything properly ( or tried to!) we still ended up sending one of the dcs friends home covered in a rash that was so bad her mum took her to a@e😬

Nope wouldnt touch it with a badge pole. They need to be using the testing kit properly.

A friend's daughter ended up in A&E with a vicious rash and huge course of antibiotics caused by a dodgy hot tub.

Give it a wide berth.

Thanks all.

they said they are okay with it but maybe their skin isn't sensitive or just luck or used to it.

one of my children is extremely intolerant of different things. She can use very few products in the bath, sun cream is a nightmare etc. She also gets sore down below as above. My other child doesn't seem to react to anything 🤷‍♀️

Oh my god no! Of course don't put the kids in it.

What relative is it?

ShirleyPhallus · 10/08/2022 18:33

We have a hot tub and it’s ridiculously easy to take care of properly, the testing strips are very easy to see what chemicals are needed to keep it clean

Its really easy to get bacterial infections from hot tubs from poor maintenance, i wouldn’t go in one if I had doubts about the cleanliness

Absolutely. I will likely never own one but if I did I'd do the same. I asked if they had testing strips, they said yes but they don't bother with them...

Is it your parents OP?

I feel for you, these things are awkward.
But sore skin is not something they can argue about easily.

StateOfTheUterus · 10/08/2022 18:51

Eww, no, don’t let the kids in, yuk! Also, not what you asked but surely too expensive to run with price of electricity? @

BullShitHere · 10/08/2022 18:56

Naomi wouldn’t let my DC in that. One had sensitive skin so def no no even if it was hygienic but even with my eldest who has no skin issues I still wouldn’t let them in it. All those chemicals just being chucked in and remnants of kitchen cleaners sounds like a recipe for disaster to me. Then again I’m no fan of hot tubs anyway and didn’t think children under a certain age were suppose to use heated ones like that. Stick to your instincts.

BullShitHere · 10/08/2022 18:58

“No way” that should read. Sorry for typo - I have no idea who Naomi is but I’m sure she wouldn’t let her children in anyway 😅

SwedishEdith · 10/08/2022 19:00

Oh, god, no. A second hand inflatable hot tub sounds bad enough in itself. Do the kids want to use it?

Well we don't go over often and if we do go over and the cover was off they might be tempted but generally I avoid it and tell parents to keep the cover on and say it's empty 😅 I've avoided it for so long and I'm usually there to say no but they are taking care of them in the next days and I'm worried they just let them use it anyway even though I've said no.

my two aren't that fussed by it. My eldest isn't really interested.

I told them to buy a cheapo paddling pool instead if they want to keep them cool!

they have all manner of people around there drinking and using it too and I'm just thinking it's a bit grim if it's not looked after properly too!

generally I am a pretty chilled parent but something about this hot tub makes me want to avoid it 😅

Their own sex pond...

I've got a wooden fancy one & was careful. Still got a massive ear infection.

No way would I go in one where I was not in control of the sanitation.

Sparklingbrook · 10/08/2022 21:32

Makes me feel itchy just thinking about it. Steer clear.
