Easy Non refrigerator food suggestions

Help me out, my useless DS18 is going away in a caravan with his friends and wants to take some food with him.

I offered to do an online shop that could be delivered to the caravan park but apparently that's a really lame idea 🤷🏻‍♀️

I don't want to give him anything that needs to be kept cool as it will be off by the time they arrive and none of them are taking a cool box.

So far my shopping list comprises of:

Tinned hotdogs
Bread rolls
Tinned beans
Cereal
Long life milk
Cakes
Biscuits
Tinned custard (to go with cake)
Crisps, tortilla chips etc
Pot noodle or pasta equivalent
Drinks
Eggs - not sure if this is wise Hmm

I'll slip some apples and fruit in just in case he has a healthy moment but I'm struggling to think of what else he can take with him, so please hit me with your suggestions Smile

Tinned vegetable curry, plus naan bread or popadoms
Tinned chilli con carne
Microwave rice
Tinned tuna or John West tuna infusions
Small jar of mayonnaise
Tinned sweetcorn
Tinned taco beans and tortilla wraps
Jar of salsa for the tortilla crisps

Brogues · 10/08/2022 17:07

Tinned curry and pack of naan breads
Tinned chilli and packet of instant rice
Pregrated cheese should be okay to go with nachos and you can get long life sour cream, salsa, guacamole etc.
Ready made crepes

Beer!! That’s ok warm apparently .
He probably won’t need much else!

LIZS · 10/08/2022 17:10

Pasta with stir in Dolmio or supermarket sauces, tuna/sweetcorn, jar of olives/sundried tomatoes
Tinned new potatoes, rice, couscous
Pots of longlife jelly, custard and rice pudding

Lavendersquare · 10/08/2022 17:10

Thanks @Fivemoreminutes1 & @Brogues great suggestions however I should have mentioned DS won't eat tuna or cheese (unless on a pizza).

He should be ok with tinned curry and micro rice I'll add those to my list. Smile

Salted peanuts
Cereal bars

SpindleInTheWind · 10/08/2022 17:11

Has he got money?

Lavendersquare · 10/08/2022 17:11

@Littlemissprosecco the beer is already bought, a priority purchase apparently!

Can you send him with some frozen stuff like burgers that can defrost en route and go in the fridge when they arrive?

Has he got money?

Not really, he's just finished A levels and has a little job but doesn't have much. He's paid for his share of the holiday and petrol money so I'm more than happy to help with a bit of shopping. That way he will be able to have a few meals out without worrying.

Heinz big soup!

LIZS · 10/08/2022 17:51

Order a click n collect locally?

thinkfast · 10/08/2022 17:54

He's 18! Can't he organise a few tins of beans and cans of beer himself?

Spanielsarepainless · 10/08/2022 17:55

Soup, tinned fruit, tinned curry.

WaahWaahWaah · 10/08/2022 17:56

Eggs will be fine, they don’t need to be stored in a fridge. I’d add some mini tomatoes and cucumbers for vitamins too. A carton of juice (for the mornings after)? Ketchup, plus oil/salt for cooking.
To be honest, your list sounds pretty extensive. They will probably just survive on beer and chips…

Littlemissprosecco · 10/08/2022 17:57

They’ll go to the kebab van

Carrieonmywaywardsun · 10/08/2022 18:09

Milk will need to be refrigerated when opened. Instant noodles, biscuits, crisps. Individually packaged breakfast bits like pain au chocolate.

Carrieonmywaywardsun · 10/08/2022 18:10

They don't need custard and cake for a camping trip!

Calmdown14 · 10/08/2022 18:36

I wouldn't bother with long life milk as they will be able to buy milk there.
If he is a tea or coffee drinker make sure he has that, washing up liquid, a sponge and a packet of Dettol wipes, and a tea towel (for the day they leave, nothing will go away before that).

Realistically make life as easy as possible. Could you do a lasagna or cottage pie in a foil dish and freeze it? It can't be that long to get there and there will be a fridge so it will be fine.

Otherwise those pasta n sauce packets are good, microwave rice (flavoured stuff), bottle of sweet chilli sauce to make it more interesting, stewing beef in a tin isn't bad, beans and sausages . You could also freeze bacon and sausages.

And bog roll!

Calmdown14 · 10/08/2022 18:39

If you don't have a cool box, freeze a couple of bottles of juice (empty a bit out first) and stick them in a bag for life with food on top.
Then they'll have a nice hang over juice to boot

PinkArt · 10/08/2022 18:46

He won't get less useless if you keep sorting things like this for him. Assuming his mates are his age, they are a group of adults now - they shouldn't need mum to work out what they can eat on holiday, if they are old enough to go on holiday themselves!
If he hasn't learned this stuff already, surely it's the perfect time to start now? Worst case they eat some weird meals for a week or have to get some emergency pizza deliveries - much lower risk than learning it when they all leave home.

fufulina · 10/08/2022 18:49

Jesus wept! He’s 18! Let the man sort his own food out!

Dippydonky · 10/08/2022 19:06

Don’t forget the tin opener!!

Getting a delivery is a brilliant idea! He’s lucky to have your sensible practical mind in his life!
