Scam? Trying to work out what!

So I get a text ‘mum I’ve changed my phone number - delete the old one!’

Weird considering DS was snoring in his bed at the time. Also weird because he has just got a new phone and is porting the number over (the number the message came from wasn’t the new phone number).

I asked who it was and they said ‘your oldest child’ (again odd - I only have one). So I said that I don’t have kids… no reply…

I’m guessing some scam but can’t work out what! Would they they say they’d been arrested and needed bail money???

Because they want you to send them money? They don’t know your DS is at home with you. It’s a well known scam and some people have lost thousands.

They will say anything just to trick you. Nothing of what they say is true. Delete and block.

I saw about this on a programme, they end up saying they need money because they're in trouble, send to x account. It is a scam and a nasty one at that.

The next bit of the scam is they tell you they have had to get a ew phone and their internet banking isn’t working yet, and will you please pay this bill/make this transfer for them and they’ll pay you back. You do so, sending money directly into the scammer’s account.

Usually a whatsapp scam. " mum, I've lost my phone so this is new number and my wallet and passport got stolen, can you transfer me some cash...."

dementedpixie · 10/08/2022 09:56

Yeah, they'll ask you to send money to them.

ButteryNuts · 10/08/2022 09:57

Super common scam. They start a convo pretending to be your family member then ask if you can send them some money.

KittenKong · 10/08/2022 09:59

I thought that - I’d heard of it before but never seen it in real life.

cheeky sod… it’s reported and blocked.

That's a really well known scam, if you google WhatsApp scams you'll get loads of results that will explain it

KittenKong · 10/08/2022 10:04

It’s the same as the old email one ‘mum I’m in an Internet cafe in Thailand and I’ve been robbed/arrested/blackmailed/lost my tickets home - send me £££££’

Same scam, different tech.
