Moving to Lowestoft

Anyone live there? I know it’s not the loveliest town but it seems nice enough. Anyone live there and enjoy it? Is it as up and coming as people say. In London now but the cost of living is freaking me out and it seems like a place by the sea where I could find work and also afford a not too cramped house.

I think Gorleston is going to been a hot spot soon. I know the high school is fine.
Also have you though about Diss and the surrounding villages?Diss high school is good and also train TK London from Diss is only 1 1/2 hours a day coast a 24 miles drive( Southwold).

I've lived in Lowestoft since 1998, both sides of the bridge. My children were raised here and I've mostly worked in Lowestoft. I grew up ten miles away in the countryside and went to school in beccles. I'm very familiar with gorleston and great Yarmouth too, and the wider area. I've no intention of moving.

The beaches, to the north and south are both great. Very sandy, the shingle builds up in the winter with the onshore winds but in the summer it's shifted when necessary and is raked and cleaned I think most days in summer. There are lifeguards on the south beach and the water is clean (but not clear). We have the excellent free first light festival here in June and there are always loads of events on.

The town centre is struggling as much as most. Loads of charity shops and a fair few poubdshops. Lots of closed up shops. But there are large supermarkets and a choice of retail parks. Good rail and bus connections. The third bridge is being built and will alleviate the regular traffic snarl ups caused by the Bascule bridge at Lowestoft and the railway crossings and bridge at oulton broad. It's easy enough to get around on bike but there's a ridiculous amount of bike theft - lots of thieving fuckers around. But I was able to help nab three last week (at least two bikes) and it seems quieter this week 😁

Lots of unemployment and homelessness. Quite a lot of supported housing and strong support from homeless and mental health charities doing good work. The dark side is present but easily avoided in the main (apart from 50p Chris, there's no escaping him).

The schools are good if the student is. Sadly the bulk aren't which brings them down in the figures. Silk purse and all that. My eldest got amazing results at GCSE and a level, is on course for a first at uni and doing a placement at a very good international company on the back of all this. My youngest did very well too. Not trying to boast but being brutally frank. All the children in our circle of friends, across three high schools, have done well and mostly their circles of friends did too. Maybe it's parenting, dunno. We were never rich, split up before they reached GCSE age etc but seeing what I see in my line of work and the neighbourhoods I've lived in I suspect it could be. A lot of ruffians around you know!

I have to deal with the police quite a lot and they actually seem to be really good in the way they interact with people. It's Suffolk so generally everyone is fairly lethargic 😂 they seem to be patient and helpful. And their Facebook pafe is hilarious! Definitely check it out.

Foodwise youve got good choices. The usual chains of MCD, KFC, Papa John, subway, Costa, dominos etc with some traditional greasy spoons, twee tea places, shitty dives, a great choice of fish and chip (dolphin) kebab (Istanbul chef), Chinese, Indian (new Raj Mahal on a Thursday night for the meal) takeaways (my favourites in brackets, can't remember the name of the Chinese I use) and some excellent restaurants - sgt peppers has always been superb - I so miss Shish. East Point Pavilion has just reopened with great beers and fantastic street food. It's dog welcoming (muntjac, lobster and pigeon have all made their way in too) and they have regular djs and events going on their. The excellent park run starts from outside now too. Plenty of places on the prom to get ice creams etc too.

If you like the outdoor lifestyle you will love it. Beach has been rammed for weeks, there are parks and reserves, great dog walking everywhere and if you have anglers in the family there is a good choice of sea and freshwater options with free access, charter boats etc (it was built on the fishing industry after all). A bit poor for sledging bit it doesn't slow a lot and rainfall is below average.

I think that's a pretty fair rundown of the place. It really is a mixture with extremes and everything in between. It's what you will make of it - if you want it to be a great place to live it will be. If you let yourself get sucked down you will be. NB beccles in the early 1990s was a real dump and has turned around so who knows? I've been around the UK and the world and i'd probably stick it around a 7/10 in general (8+ for me as I'm outdoorsy)

Happy to answer any questions. Maybe come visit for a week and have a good look around. And you will get a lot of house for your money.

I think it offers way more than gorleston and Yarmouth too

Mycatsgoldtooth · 10/08/2022 14:35

Thank you @Damnloginpopup that was epic and really interesting. Thank you!

I think it’s ok as well! There are good and bad parts like anywhere else. Some of the schools are good, I agree a lot depends on the child.
The main high street is dead but the old high street and London Road South have some great independent shops and there’s a new vegan deli opening in the town centre soon as well, if that’s your thing!
I wouldn’t live right in the centre of town but there are plenty of nice areas in North Lowestoft that are safe and quiet, you’d easily be able to find somewhere decent with your budget. Oulton Broad and Carlton Colville aren’t too far out and are nice too.
A lot of money has been going into regeneration and that is set to continue.

cocobean26 · 10/08/2022 18:09

I lived in Lowestoft many years ago & it is still one of my all time favourite places, I try to go back with my DC at least once a year. Oulton Broad, Pakefield Cliffs, Kessingland Beach (pebbly but great for dog walks) and all 15 minutes away from Southwold. And as a PP said a visit to sgt peppers is a must.

worriedniece · 10/08/2022 18:22

Winterton on sea?

Greengr · 10/08/2022 19:04

Just been on the local news that Lowestoft has been awarded £25 million funding for a regeneration programme.

Damnloginpopup · 10/08/2022 19:19

That's good news. There is quite a bit going on already (all a waste of money according to the local Facebook pages of course).

Natsku · 10/08/2022 19:24

I do like the food court in the East Point Pavilion, lovely gluten free pizza.

Juniperbeetroot · 10/08/2022 19:39

Love the Mexican place in the Pavillion!

Damnloginpopup · 10/08/2022 20:52

Have you tried the flatbreads yet? They're cracking! And the flavours in the shogun burger are absolutely gorgeous! Coffee is superb from the kiosk outside too (and the sausage rolls!). It's only been open a few weeks and I'm already a regular 😋 I just can't stay away 😂

Juniperbeetroot · 10/08/2022 20:58

😂no I’ve only been the once so far! Need to go back soon though.

Singleandproud · 11/08/2022 09:39

The schools in the area aren't bad just a reflection of the cohort that attend. Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft areas have a higher than average parent illiteracy, parental additional need and mental health issues and this trickles down to children with similar difficulties which can lead to behavioural difficulties, for example 55% of our year 7s have a reading age below 8 years old. All local schools work incredibly hard to both support these children and stretch the more able. All breakfast and after school clubs at my DDs school both Primary and Secondary were free and the schools were hard to improve cultural capital.

Bright children and children from supportive families do well regardless and my experience is that the students actually develop great empathetic skills and are great at supporting each other.

balalake · 11/08/2022 09:46

Consider some of the local alternatives, Beccles, Bungay or Gorleston come to mind.

CDD1992 · 11/08/2022 09:53

I'd personally avoid it. Yes it's got its nice bits, the beach etc. But the town is run down and anti social behaviour levels are high. I wouldn't personally chose to raise a family there if that is in your current situation or future plans.

woopdedoodle · 11/08/2022 09:57

We have family there, their cost of living is very low. All big houses , good jobs but...

It's the only place in Britain we've been abused in the street for being foreign.

stridesy · 11/09/2022 21:14

We moved from Surrey/s London to Lowestoft from a two bed flat to a three bed house with garden for the same value. People moan about crime on the local fb groups which I find laughable in comparison and I supposedly lived in one of the safest areas in London with no gangs.
I would not live anywhere near the centre of town but then the prices reflect that. We live south side but Oulton broad, Pakefield and Carlton Coville are nice. Beccles is also very quaint.
The high street is run down but I tend to go to Norwich for shopping and activities. There is a lot to do due to it being near a tourist area. I’m happy with my daughters school and they don’t get as oversubscribed as where we used to live so I had none of that worry.

crazycadetmum · 11/09/2022 21:47

I live near Bungay..30 mins drive to Beaches..like Walberswick. Southwold or Lowestoft snd 30 mins into Norwich for any retail therapy! Best of both worlds
