Tesco meat red tractor gone

alwaysfactor50 · 09/08/2022 22:10

Does anyone know why this is? I don't eat meat but my family do, I usually buy from our butcher but occasionally I chuck some in my online shop and couldn't find it on their mince. I thought this was something they prided themselves on

A meat tractor?

BuffScrag · 09/08/2022 22:27

Tesco still listed as a licensee by Red Tractor website: trade.redtractor.org.uk/our-logos/

BarbaraofSeville · 09/08/2022 22:32

If you look on the Tesco website, some of the packs look like the Red Tractor logo is blanked out and some say from TRUSTED FARMS (sic) which is probably their own version. Or maybe it's sourced outside the UK so can't be labelled as Red Tractor?

Some of the Finest branded beef is still Red Tractor labelled, but probably a change they'll quietly introduce and hope that people don't notice.

Presumably to cut costs they aren't buying red tractor assured beef for mince at the moment.

Wouldn't be surprised if it's not even British if that's the case.

Scrowy · 09/08/2022 22:39

Actually as a farmer who jumps through all the hoops to be red tractor assured (although we call it FABBL / farm assurance) this makes me absolutely furious.

The supermarkets have demanded for years that their meat is red tractor assured. Farmers have invested in the scheme, have adhered to the very very high standards and have done what has been asked of them despite many of the rules being nonsense.

Then when things get a bit tough the supermarkets quietly drop it (you can bet if Tesco have others will follow suit) leaving all the British farmers who have bought into the scheme immediately undercut overnight by foreign imports and farmers who for whatever reason have decided to forgo the scheme and will have lower costs as a result.

Doesn't surprise me in the least, I've not shopped in Tesco for years, they've always shafted their suppliers.

I always make sure the meat I buy has the Red Tractor on and so should everyone else.

YorkshireTeaCup · 09/08/2022 23:00

We get an online delivery from tesco (SW London) and there has been no mince at all available for weeks, let alone red tractor. I assumed it was an issue with our store but if it is happening elsewhere, then maybe there are bigger supply issues going on?

alwaysfactor50 · 13/08/2022 10:27

@Scrowy I always look for the tractor and I can only imagine what you have to do to get it. It definitely looks like it's happening on the quiet 🤬

@YorkshireTeaCup it's saying UK produced meat now on the packet I bought

The fresh meat I buy in Aldi and Lidl is usually British and a lot of it has the Red Tractor logo on it.

Some stores also have RSPCA logo on their meat and eggs, I buy that too.

IWentAwayIStayedAway · 13/08/2022 10:35

UK produced can be stated if it was minced in UK ie not UK product, imported and processed in UK🤮

The labels on meat can tell you a lot about country of origin, where it was slaughtered, where it was packed etc if you look closely.

uk produced doesn't necessarily mean it is uk meat.

Sprig1 · 13/08/2022 10:57

I wouldn't buy meat from Tesco. Agree that uk produced probably only means processed here, not grown here. Do you have a Morrisons near you? They have a much better relationship with their farmers. Also if you have freezer space you may want to look in to buying in bulk from a local farmer. We sell lamb (half/whole), pork (quarter pig box) locally and we buy our beef in a 10kg box from a neighbouring farmer. It works out excellent value and you will know exactly where your meat comes from.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 13/08/2022 11:14

Could it have gone in for a service? 😁

birdfeeders · 13/08/2022 11:47

Shame on Tesco. Actually, next time you go shopping, look the labels on different packs of meat and sandwich meat. You'll see a lot from the EU, probably also some from Brazil i.e. directly linked to rainforest deforestation. It's hiding in plain sight and the welfare reason I won't eat any meat because people pick up all this stuff without thinking of the implications
