Why don't drawers go all the way under the bed?

Looking mainly at IKEA, but most others seem the same. Single bed with drawers underneath but the drawers are just over half the width of the bed. Why is this? Is there a reason for it?
Airflow?
Drawers wouldn't balance when pulled out?
We need to replace DS (almost teen)'s single and am looking at storage options.

Drawers wouldn't balance when pulled out?

I suspect it's this.

I’ve got an IKEA daybed so has my DD. The drawers are full depth, and the bed can convert to a double easily.

So you can stub your toes in the middle of the night.

If you are talking about bed frames ( non divan types) it's so you can have them both sides

OliveRanch · 09/08/2022 20:04

It’s so cats can climb into them and curl up in your clean clothes and sheets, and give you a heart attack when you open them.

StandUpPirates · 09/08/2022 20:28

@LutherRalph1 that doesn't make sense though as the drawers are more than half the width of the bed but not the full width. So you couldn't have drawers on both sides. Yes, I'm looking for proper bed frame with a decent mattress.

@Soontobe60 Thanks, but I need a standard single for him, not a narrow one. Also without a plate at the end of the bed. He's 5'6 and not yet a teenager!

@OliveRanch 😍I wish we could have cats!

The bed will have to go against a wall, so I don't need or can't have access from one side.

I guess in a narrow bedroom you might not be able to get a full-width drawer in and out.

We have a Hemnes bed and the drawers are very heavy, in fact the whole bed is heavy as anything. And on the wobbly old floorboards in the room its in, it doesn't open and close very well, so lighter, shorter drawers might have been preferable!

Hugasauras · 09/08/2022 20:34

We have an IKEA bed with drawers either side and they meet in the middle.

grannycake · 09/08/2022 20:34

I've got an IKEA ottoman bed. Would this be an option

Hugasauras · 09/08/2022 20:34

Are you sure you're looking at the right size of drawers? Or the right ones for that bed frame?

StandUpPirates · 09/08/2022 20:46

@Hugasauras yes. The Nordli for example. Bed is 90cm wide, the drawers are 51cm deep. Malm is 105cm and the drawers are 59cm.

Where would you hide the Christmas presents if the drawers were full width 😂I reckon it's because there usually isn't enough space around the bed to pull out deeper drawers all the way.

Hugasauras · 09/08/2022 20:48

We have a Malm and have four drawers under it 🤔 two each side

Hugasauras · 09/08/2022 20:50

Oh just saw it's a single bed. That'll be why. They are shared drawers between double and single.
