Dry clean only curtains

Collective wisdom needed. Would you or have you ever put your dry clean only curtains in the washing machine?

They're bog standard JL ones like this:

I washed my John Lewis curtains and the lining shrunk more than the outer fabric. It didn't bother me too much as they were quite old and soon to be replaced, but I wouldn't recommend doing it.

I machine wash absolutely everything. Even dry clean only. Never had an issue. But nothing has been mega expensive.
Dcs curtains are plain dry clean only were about £40 to buy. Dry cleaners wanted £40 to clean them with a 5 day turn around. They wont sleep unless dark. So i risked machine wash on 30.with the view if they ruined i could shoot to dunelm and get a new pair.
They were fine

AnyoneElseFeelDone · 09/08/2022 20:11

I'm toying with risking it and replacing them if needed as they've been up a while. Have a 2nd pair to do of these are successful...so would save lots of money and like you say, the week turnaround is off putting

My mum did - they ended up about 4" shorter

MissVantaBlack · 09/08/2022 20:13

I machine-washed my JL curtains and the curtain shrank more than the lining, so I now have a white strip of curtain lining peeking out at the bottom! I hate dry cleaning anything, so they havent been cleaned since Blush

LadySlipper · 09/08/2022 20:15

Always. Just make sure they go on a cold wash and line dry.

doilookremotelyinterested · 09/08/2022 20:17

Wash them on a coldish gentle wash and they'll be fine. I do. Although mine aren't lined (deliberately so I could). But even so.

Amicompletelyinsane · 09/08/2022 20:17

My dry clean curtains shrank even on the delicate wash. They are currently now an inch too short, but sadly not evenly shrunk 🙈

Beamur · 09/08/2022 20:18

Don't do it.

Beamur · 09/08/2022 20:19

I did. They shrunk, couldn't be used again.

QuebecBagnet · 09/08/2022 20:24

I did, they were so short after they had to be binned. They were very old and threadbare so wasn’t that fussed.

QuebecBagnet · 09/08/2022 20:24

And I washed them in a twenty degree hand wash!

CathyorClaire · 09/08/2022 20:27

I would (and have with other items) if the machine had a hand wash programme.

As you're happy to replace if it all goes tits up I'd say go for it.

DramaAlpaca · 09/08/2022 20:29

I tried. The result wasn't good.

hedgehoglurker · 09/08/2022 22:04

I had the opposite to Hoghug. The curtains shrunk more than the lining. I washed on cold, hand-wash setting and line dried.

I took up the linings so they didn't show, but the curtains lost a few inches of length.

AnyoneElseFeelDone · 10/08/2022 20:51

Oh dear, don't think I've got the balls to risk it. Will go ask for a price at the dry cleaners.

Thanks all

I didn't realise you're supposed to wash curtains Blush

Transformatio · 10/08/2022 21:40

Yes - JL made to measure curtains on a cold wash. They shrank and as they were floor length then look silly - I then added a panel (bigger than the shrinkage) in another colour to the bottom to sort it. I DO NOT advise washing them!
