No dentists available. Tooth pain making me miserable

I have a wisdom tooth that's cut through - it feels like there's no room for it! If that makes sense: and it's cutting into my cheek Sad

It's so sore. I can't even open my mouth wide enough properly

I have rung round but nobody can take me on. Phoned 111 and they can't help - they said they don't deal with dental issues

What else can I do! It's so horrific. Can I pull it myself! I know it'll be painful BUT is there anything else that could go wrong if I do pull it?

Thank you so much

My practice has stopped doing NHS work and has made all their list private inc children. There is no one within at least 50 miles taking on NHS patients. If you can’t afford private treatment there is nothing where I live (England). I need a crown which will be £800 privately or an implant at £3k so I’m looking at an extraction (not cheap but much cheaper than either of the other options) which will leave me with only one of my three back molars in that quarter of my mouth so probably mean I will struggle to eat as the same tooth the other side is very painful (deep filling, prob needs root treatment which I can’t afford). I’m mid 40s and have seen a dentist at least annually since I was born.

I've been on a dentist's waiting list for 16 months now. I phoned them 3 months ago and they confirmed I'm still on the list but have no idea how long I'll have to wait to actually get a place on their books.

Go private and stick it on your credit card. No point being in pain.

It is shocking the lack of dental care in this country I really sympathise with anyone in this awful predicament, there is nothing worse than dental pain. Unfortunately this situation is going to get worse and not better and if you want reliable dental care in this country then there really is no way around it apart from going private. Everyone is going to have to make harsh decisions on what they prioritise and I think a monthly insurance like Denplan started as soon as possible whilst teeth are in good condition is going to be the only way forward. It’s not right, but I don’t see any other option than to try and make an allowance for it within household expenditure and class it like monthly utility bills. I really hope you get some relief soon OP.

I'm ashamed to admit it - I didn't actually know you could get insurance for dental care!

I work for 111. It's absolutely ridiculous that dentists and the begs website direct people to us when they can't find a dentist - we don't have a pool of available dentists. If you can't find one, neither can we

I always tell people at the start of a dental call that it's unlikely I'll be able to help just to try and manage their expectations

Corsodyl dental gel rub it on. I suffer with this, wisdom tooth is half through and food gets stuck under the flap and causes me big trouble. I recommended this by a dentist when I was pregnant and suffering with it again.

Did your dentist not offer to remove it?

I had the same pain @shehesmesloos but luckily for me I have Denplan so saw my dentist
I do have a wisdom tooth coming through ( aged 62 ! So proud ) and there was a bit of infection
I was told to us a saline moth wash
1 tsp of salt in an inch of boiling water in a glass , then add 2 inches of cold water and swish it round the offending part of mouth , for as long as you can and work up to a minute ( it will be about body temperature )
do this 3 times a day
within 48 hours it was better
the next step , if this hadn’t worked would have been antibiotics , failing that , extraction
try the saline , take some painkillers
( I was so sore I could barely talk ,let alone smile )
also clean it really well with the toothbrush ( it should apparently make you wince ) and can you afford to get a water flosser ?
Mine was a cheaply , about £30 and really helps

No, this was an emergency dentist who saw me and recommended the gel. My regular dentist has said the roots wrap around other teeth roots and I would need them both pulling out in a hospital. I think the wait for the hospital app is a year + maybe more now due to covid, this is going off how long a work colleague was waiting.

@Thekormachameleon but Dental emergencies for people that didn't have a dentist used to be the responsibility of the NHS. Like so many services this has been eroded.

The Emergency Dental clinics in my region have only a handful of appointments a day and the City I live in is down to 5 NHS practices in a population of around 110K and there are no NHS practices anywhere nearby taking patients.

Without hijacking Op's thread and being a dentist it's appalling what is going on.

People should not expect NHS Dental access to improve; the Goverment have said there is no more money, they make noises about reform but this has been going on since 2008 with no real change. The Goverment don't appear to have any plan for improving emergency access and it's pretty impossible to recruit dentists or nurses to work in the NHS.
