Was the photo taken in France? Looks like Benedictine robes to me.

ZingotheDingo · 09/08/2022 13:55

No, it's in the UK.

Possibly Amish?

It's basically a long, ultra-modest dress, so it would meet modesty standards for most devout religions, including Islam, Orthodox Judaism and fundamentalist Christian sects. It could also easily be a nun's habit, among other things. Or indeed it could be fancy dress!

Is there a reason you need to know? Or were you just curious?

ZingotheDingo · 09/08/2022 14:39

I wanted to know as I found it ultra stressful to see and I am trying to figure out some childhood (very poorly) formed memories and body memories.

thanks for answering, none of these answers yet make sense.

It wouldn’t be Amish as they are not in this country and the women wear bonnets. We have Mennonites (I know of some in Shropshire) and Bruderhof (Peckham, Sussex and Kent) but they wear headscarves tied under the chin.

Could be from a number of different religions. I Morocco, it’s common see long dresses with hoods. It’s common to see different forms of religious garb in the UK. Are you visiting from abroad?

ImEasyLikeSundayMorning · 09/08/2022 15:13

Religion?

looks like a dressing gown to me.

Religion of Asda.

Echobelly · 09/08/2022 15:19

My guess might be Greek or Eastern Orthodox nun, perhaps?

It's not Jewish Orthodox.

ZingotheDingo · 09/08/2022 15:21

I know it’s not Jewish Orthodox (or else I’ve been blind my entire life).

I now live in the UK but childhood was not in the UK

Man or woman?

Coming to or going from the camera?

ZingotheDingo · 09/08/2022 15:46

Man and walking away from the camera

Monk maybe?

PotteringPondering · 09/08/2022 21:11

Benedictine Catholic monks wear black robes with a white cord round the waist. So that's probably the closest if it is monastic dress.

But a Benedictine cord is basically a rope that goes round the waist outside the robes, and the loose ends hang down at the front. In your pic, it looks more like a fabric tie that goes inside the garment and is tied in a bow at the back. That's not at all Benedictine.

It looks to me nothing like Amish or any of the Reformed groups either.

TBH it does have more of an air of fashion or dressing gown to me!

L1ttledrummergirl · 09/08/2022 21:31

Could it be to do with a martial arts club? The trousers look like hakama from the photo.

Decidualcast · 09/08/2022 22:17

I just can’t imagine Benedictine monks wearing those shoes though.
I’m voting for dressing gown.

SwedeCarrotLime · 09/08/2022 22:29

I think that’s a dressing gown, OP.
