Interesting article in the FT about private school fees

I’m not sure why it popped up on my social media, we haven’t ever considered sending our dc to private school but there are often questions on MN about the affordability of educating a child privately.

It’s an interesting read, especially if grandparents are thinking about helping out. Costs have gone up recently far more than the rate of inflation.

It’s hidden behind a pay wall.

I guess if you don’t pay to read the FT you probably can’t afford private school 😂

They’re beyond insane and the gap between London schools and those elsewhere in the country is huge. A good school up north, say Manchester Grammar, is £14k per year where as a similar school in London such as Habs is £23k a year. Massive difference in affordability

If you put ‘Financial Times private school fees’ into your search bar you should be able to access the article for free.

If you think those fees are high you should look at those for full-time performing arts schools. They are truly eye-watering.

The London day schools are nothing compared to the boarding schools! 44k per year all over the country. Teachers' salaries are higher in London (state and private) which is why fees are more.

One of my relatives attends a prestigious London school, one of the most academic in the country. Boys are selected on ability - if they can't afford the fees they get a full bursary. So it's not always the case that you have to be wealthy to access private education.

This is true (may be the school I work at) but there's a big wadge of people in between who wouldn't qualify but also couldn't manage the fees. Think it's something like 45k salary limit. Someone on that salary would be very hard pressed to afford £23k in fees post tax in London!
