Any families cut out sugar? What changes did you notice?

Shit sick of people (grandparents looking at you!) constantly giving my kids treats. So many playdates & sleepovers this summer, most have copious ammounts of sweets & fizzy drinks. Kids playing with neighbours kids, my lovely neighbour gives them ice cream, lollipops, cola so I need to do the same when they're playing here... Sleepovers so hard to police when they're not in ours..
Anyway today I have decided to cut of sugary treats & drinks. They can have popcorn as a treat & if they're anywhere near me they need to ask me before taking a treat or say thanks I'll save for later if it's something they really want...
I'm interested in how the decreased sugar will benefit... I'm addicted do haribo so I'm pleased to be cutting out... They will of course be allowed treats at special occasions etc it's just that treats have become a daily norm not a treat if that makes sense & it was never like that in our house before, I just want to tighten the reins.

Oh to answer your question- we follow the paleo diet at home which is very low sugar. My energy levels are way better and I don't get colds as much. My period pain improved. DH's gastro problems improved significantly although they are still there.

Reduce it. You shouldn't cut any food group out entirely! Don't give your kids eating disorders

We cut out added sugar. It was hard but I used to experience severe hunger pangs which made me weak and irritable. I think when you load up on sugar it causes your metabolism to become distorted. I do still get hungry of course but can manage my mood better. Also I really love fruit now as that has taken the place of my traditional sweet treats which means more vitamin intake.

Don't make it a big deal or mention it to the children otherwise it becomes an issue. I started off making my own desserts by baking but using half the sugar to wean them off. Now treats involve lots of natural yogurt, savoury snacks, fruit and things like banana bread. It is a lot more work but worth it for me as I know it has less of an impact on our dental health and risk of other health issues.

There's nothing wrong with offering your neighbours children healthy snacks. You've then reciprocated their kindness.

Sugary stuff causes glucose spikes. So bad for your brain, gut - it's madness that people are still 'treating' kids.
I mean don't they watch any of the tv progs about diet, listen to radio info on health.
It's a sort of ' it didn't do me any harm' mentality when in fact we have an obese population with diabetes and the nightmare of dementia in later years. Largely due to eating crap - and we all know it.

YES. It might sound stupid, but I just can't stop blaming my mum for it. She still kinds of feel offended when I refuse to eat sweets when I visit her (it's just she brews coffee and puts biscuits on the plate to help yourself, not like she cuts slice of cake for me and I refuse to eat it). I will never forget how resentful she felt towards my sister that she didn't look the way she expected her to be (chubby child, now adult with very low self esteem who feels guilty whenever eats something unhealthy) and yet she still used to buy chocolates, m&m's, biscuits, baked cakes. This shit really stays with your for life and affects quality of living.
