For the love of god how do you cook paratha

Randomly picked up a packet of frozen paratha in Tesco a few months back

DD now eats them for breakfast, lunch and dinner (slight exaggeration)

£3.50 per pack and I’m funding a paratha crack habit with half my wages

Ok so how hard can they be to make? Bought ingredients, made them, by “them” I mean rock hard lumpy frisbees cum pancakes

Please give me top tips or idiots guide, it’s the kneading isn’t it??

Ooh they’re lovely aren’t they?! I buy the frozen ones too, then slather them with butter. I hear a midnight snack calling me!

You'd need to find a good source of affordable priced butter ghee if it's going to taste right but it's got to be worth a try.

I have no idea but just thought I’d let you know you’ve really tickled me. I didn’t read the Latin “cum” but rather the slang “cum”.

I think part of it is the ghee and also cooking them on a high heat, so that they puff up. I press them down with a turner to make sure they cook all the way through.

@ReeseWitherfork - I now really want to see the marketing campaign for Rock Hard Lumpy Frisbee Cum Pancakes ™️

@SteveHarringtonsChestHair DD eats them with jam for breakfast, cheese with lunch, hummus for snack, on their own wandering around the house - she’s bloody obsessed

Butter and paratha?! In this economy?!

Have a look on youtube OP.They have fantastic recipe's on there.

Wheat flour, make dough with flour and water and tablespoon of oil. Make a small ball, fist sized, roll it with rolling pin, put oil on it, fold dough inwards, then roll out a second time. Then heat both sides in oil until golden.
instructions from Indian husband.

Nadiya Hussain’s cheats paratha - she fries ready rolled puff pastry. It’s a pretty good sub.
We moved and our new Tesco doesn’t stock them.

KangarooKenny · 09/08/2022 07:17

I love stuffed paratha’s, haven’t had them for years.

Madbadandusuallysad · 09/08/2022 07:26

Has she tried paranthas with potato and onion filling?? Yummy.
I cool mine on a medium heat, when one side is done I put a bit of ghee on it or a spritz of olive oil if I haven't got ghee, then flip it over repeat with the other side.

TheGingerNinjaa · 09/08/2022 07:29

I might have misunderstood but I think OP wants to make parathas from scratch.
Its not easy, its harder to make than chappatis which needs skill to make them round, thin and soft. Parathas are more than chappatis because you build up the layers, putting ghee in between.

I would definitely recommend looking it up on youtube. There are techniques to make the "layers" that result in a light crispy paratha. A bit like making puff pastry. Its definitely doable and lots of fun to make. You can also make it healthier by adjusting your ghee or butter.

I personally prefer stuffed parathas! Parathas either with a filling of spiced potatoes or seasoned ground lamb...delicious!

If they’re rock hard you’re doing something wrong!
