Hedgehog has moved into the garden

How can I make her welcome?

We live rurally down plenty of access to fields etc. she's built a nest of dry leaves in a flower bed against the stone wall of the house. Wakes up snuffling around at 2030 every night. I've left out a dish of water as it's so hot but wondered if I should be doing anything else?

You could put down some cat food OP. They love that.

IheartBTS · 08/08/2022 21:34

We have a hedgehog too, and I love their visits! We put out dry hedgehog food and water for ours, and have recently put out a hedgehog house in the area they seem to prefer (which hedgehog approved hay).

My dog was acting weird last week, running in and out the open door, sat bolt upright staring at the door from his bed...
Saw what I thought was one of his toys in the doorway

Only meat flavoured cat food, they dont like/or can't have fish. I can't remember which.
Dried mealworms aren't good for them. Just let them be and enjoy eating all your slugs. Only feed them if they are coming into winter and are looking small.

Cheap dry cat biscuits are best - chicken - no fish
And the water is very important! Lucky you 😊

Hollyhocksarenotmessy · 08/08/2022 21:52

Water is most important. Food is an added extra but not really necessary this time of year.

Obviously don't use slug pellets, incecticides etc in the garden.

Leave messy bits of the garden, leaves unswept, overgrown bits. Ours love rustling under shrubs and rooting under the tree (lots of fallen leaves we leave).

Playplayaway · 08/08/2022 21:54

Yes we just put out a little pile of poultry cat biscuits and water in a few shallow dishes dotted around the garden. We've kept a small 1 metre square patch of lawn hydrated so hopefully they can find some bugs.
They do come to depend on the food and water so try not to forget to do it each evening.

Water and dry chicken cat biscuits. Tesco kitten ones are good. Sadly some of the specialist hedgehog foods are in fact really bad for them. There's no controls whatsoever on what people can call hedgehog food

If you're on Facebook there's a very informative group called "Hedgehogs!"

Have a look at this ongoing thread, loads of info there-

We have one too, lovely seeing him every night coming out for a snuffle, he's getting really brave now.

I have what I assume is a mother and two smaller hedgehogs who visit my garden. I put out a dish of water and have bought Spike's dry hedgehog food. They also seem to hoover through any left over bird food aqnd peanuts on my patio. My main problem is stopping random cats from eating the food before the hedgehogs appear.

I've bought a hedgehog house but no sign of them moving in yet. They apparently can travel up to two miles every night, which is pretty amazing on their little legs.

We use this brand also. Funnily enough, the slugs appear on the food within minutes of the food being put out, so it’s a double whammy for our little spikes friend 😁
