Are you new money or working class?

Many of the threads have been about middle class and what they like and undermine. Much of the time, "new money" or working class spend most of their time explaining themselves on these threads.

This is a thread for new money or working class and our lifestyle choices. You don't have to explain yourself.

I'll start.
I have an LV Neverfull bag
Went to Paris for French Open, took pics next to Eiffe Tower, Arc de triomphe, etc

I've been to all continents and never for a minute thought about link between social class, lifestyle choices and travel - MN does truly open up minds.

Yes, I am new money, polite and treat everyone equally - and no it's not true only upper class are polite, kind, etc - it's a particular middle class myth.

So were do you go for holidays? What do you eat home? Are you also an arsehole?

Yes I'm an arsehole (but a really nice one) but I don't understand the rest of your thread at all. Can you please explain?

Dalaidramailama · 08/08/2022 19:45

I think your thread just means where do you place yourself, am I correct?

I class myself as educated working class. I have a first class degree and just about to embark on a research masters, however I live in a council house and say fuck a lot.

I’m new money, I go on holiday 8-10 times a year. I like to cruise, stay in posh UK hotels, visit South America and South Africa. I love the Caribbean and am very partial to twin centre holidays.
I’m very nice to people and tend to make friends easily. My friends often tell me that although I'm
extremely comfortable financially I never make a thing of having money.
I like to eat out about four or so times a week and go to the cinema once a week and to the local theatre about 6 times a year.
I don’t buy expensive clothes but do have s very expensive handbag habit. No Mulberry for me I like something blingier.

ifined · 08/08/2022 19:55

I don't speak English. Where do you place yourself in terms of social class, anything(holiday destinations, diet and other lifestyle choices)you wouldn't change even if middle class sneers at you?

Daughter of a tradesman but multiple degrees and big corporate job. I get lost between all classes which is sometimes a challenge.
I drive an obnoxious turquoise 4x4, wear expensive watches and handbags but very polite and considerate to everyone, culturally aware due to extensive work travel and knowledgable re: wine, food, classic fashion etc.
Swear probably too much and still hang out in my childhood haunts.
The middle classes look down their nose from the boring grey range rovers but feel out of touch with my childhood friends!

Unless you're using some impressive translation tool your English is fantastic.

I was born into a working class family. People assume I'm middle class because of our lifestyle but that's just because we've bought a bigger house in a more rural area - I'm from a Midlands council estate.

countdowntonap · 08/08/2022 22:24

Is the LV Neverfull bag an indicator of your being new money? I don’t understand your points of reference.

I thought that class was considered a British thing?

I don’t know or care what class I am tbh.

wonderstuff · 08/08/2022 22:38

Honestly I’m not sure. I’m a teacher, my mum very working class, father from family of teachers and farmers. I’m the first in my family to go straight to university from school. I’ve got a nice house due to inheritance. We were dirt poor and on benefits in the 2007 recession. Am I WC am I MC? Does anyone really care?

I’m wealthy relative to the UK average but not in MN terms. MN seems to be either super rich or dirt poor.

ToddlerIs2 · 08/08/2022 22:39

I'm not sure your class markers are the same if you're in a different country @ifined , I think the British Class System is different to other countries.

I have one degree straight from high school and I'm studying for a second degree thorough OU as I have young kids at home. I love the theatre - opera, ballet, musical theatre, the lot. Go when I see something I love and have started taking DS with me. I've fairly ok traveled (Norway, France, Germany, Netherlands, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Canaries, Dom Republic, Ireland, Italy, Soainy). I volunteer and have since I graduated. I read a lot and listen to a mix of music Inc classical. But none of those really are class indicators

midsomermurderess · 08/08/2022 22:40

God , this never stops, does it?

GoodVibesHere · 08/08/2022 22:44

Sorry, but what a load of nonsense

SmellyWellyWoo · 08/08/2022 23:13

Working class, always, regardless of bank balance.

Abcdefgh1234 · 09/08/2022 00:36

i’m not british. I’m indonesian. I’m used to be old money. My parents were very rich. My father was minister but was involved in illegal activities and makes us bankrupt.

now i married working class british. Although i’m not fully understand with ‘classes’ in england. So i’m not so sure what classes arr we in. He earns 70k a year. Enough for us but not extravagant.

i have lots designer bags from my old life. I’ve got several hermes bags, chanel, etc.

but my life so different now. I travel back to indonesia every 2 year. Holiday usually within england and i travel in economy class now.

we dont privately educate our child. I want to. But couldn’t afford it.

cardibach · 26/11/2022 18:00

Doesn’t OWN the means of production. I must learn to proof read.

cardibach · 26/11/2022 18:02

Wait. My post posted and that’s when I saw the typo. Where’s it gone?
try again.
I think there’s cultural perception of working class in the UK- manual work, certain types of community and housing etc - so the savoy wouldn’t be for that group. However, some people whose parents were in those groups still feel ‘culturally’ working class even if they themselves do more middle class jobs.
marx would have said that you are working class unless you own the means of production, so if that’s her own business, she doesn’t really fit that definition either.

merryhouse · 26/11/2022 20:51

you can't afford to privately educate your child because you're only on 70k?

You're definitely middle-class.

merryhouse · 26/11/2022 20:55

I'm definitely middle-class too. Even though our household income will be about £15k this financial year and was basically zero for nearly five years previously -

in fact, the very idea of being able to survive on no income whatsoever puts us firmly in the middle-class bracket
