What would you do?

Due to return to work soon, FTM, main earner.

Job A: part time, 2-3 shifts (12hrs) per week, including nights.

Job B: Full time for a year whilst gaining a postgraduate qualification, after this salary would increase and I could drop to part time. Plus more opportunities in the future for home working, more family friendly hours. No shifts or weekends.

Basically I don't want to leave my baby but I know I have to.

Help me decide!

I would go for Job B. It may be tough for the year, but it is really not a long time setting yourself up for the future - better money, more family friendly hours etc.

My DCs are now 16 and 12, and I feel need me more now than when they were babies.

B

gotagooddeal · 08/08/2022 18:02

B. I done 12 hour shifts nights and weekends and my teenager went off the rails and my little one was very behind in school. He would always be upset because I couldn't take or pick him up from school. When I was home I was so tired and irritable to engage with his studies.

Not saying this will be you but I do regret it

JanglyBeads · 08/08/2022 18:05

If you go for B is the study in addition to the FT hours or included in them?

bumpytrumpy · 08/08/2022 18:12

I'd go for the hard year while your baby is too small to remember it. Family friendly hours are more valuable than diamonds once they're at school.

bumpytrumpy · 08/08/2022 18:13

By that I mean Job B

Thanks everyone that has commented so far, that's my thinking too but I keep doubting myself. Going to miss him loads. But he will only be 2 when I can go part time!

B - 100%

BeanyBops · 08/08/2022 19:49

B. Soon your little one will start having proper interests like favourite cartoons and toys and going to particular places and really enjoying wearing certain things, and with job B you'll be better able to provide all of those things.

Also with A, can't underestimate the impact of night shifts. You might work 12 hours but then you'll have to sleep through at least some of the next day and you'll lose that extra time anyway.

LouLou198 · 08/08/2022 19:51

B - I would never do night shifts again!
Short term B might be difficult but worth it for long term gain IMO

gotagooddeal · 08/08/2022 20:03

@BeanyBops - exactly! 👏🏽👏🏽

AmIAlone52 · 08/08/2022 20:08

Definitely B.
