Energy bills when moving home

Hi, moving at the beginning of Sep.
Really worried about energy prices and thought I'd transfer my existing account to new property. I'm with OVO and called them today and they said I can only close existing account and open a new one when I'm actually in the new property.

Does this seem right? I've been trying to get online quotes with other providers but they all say don't switch tariffs atm, stay with existing provider.

I think an easier option is to find out the provider of new place.
They can do an estimate based on actual property.

You're probably best being on the price cap rate unless you have a cheap fix that you want to hold on to, so it doesn't really make much of a difference, the price will be the same whoever supplies the energy.

If you are on a 'cheap' fix, ie one taken out at least a few months ago, you'll need to read the contract to see if you're allowed to take it with you when you move house.

Thanks - I looked at the existing provider who I haven't heard of - Utility Warehouse, the estimate is very cheap but it's a variable rate. Seems too good to be true? When I've tried to get quotes for other suppliers they are well over £400 pm 😳

I was just surprised that I couldn't carry over existing OVO contract.

U need to call up utility warehouse and get a quote for that property but the fixed rate one.

You say it seems cheap, the standard rate but has the property been lived in the full last yr?

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 10/08/2022 11:07

Please make sure that on the day you leave your current property you take meter readings and photos of the meter, then do the same when you get to your new property.

You should submit your meter readings to the old provider for the old house to make sure you don't end up paying for the gas and electric used by the new resident.

Utility Warehouse won't be significantly cheaper than the price cap, and it will increase in October. It's also dependent on taking other services from them, and the SIM only mobile package looks especially poor value for money.

It's also a MLM so many people would avoid them for that reason alone.

Whoever you get quotes from, make sure you read the small print and do your own calculations on the cost based on the number of units that you use because suppliers sometimes quote £x per month, but in the small print, that's based on a low usage and it will increase later if you use more than that.

When we moved we couldn't transfer our existing provider. Apparently it was normal to continue using the existing provider to the property, and then move to another after

YukoandHiro · 10/08/2022 11:21

It's normal to not be able to transfer with the move, you do it from the old provider once you move.

I just recently moved myself and I was unable to take my account with me as the advisor stated that "because of the energy crisis they are unable to take the supply account from another supplier" I have had to open a new account with the existing supplier of my new home. I don't know if I should have taken the fixed rate offered as it was quoted as £200 more a month than standard. I have 13 days left to decide. It's all very confusing. I hope you sort it out and all goes well

queenjaneappro · 10/08/2022 12:42

Thanks everyone
It seems I can't do anything until I actually move - I'm renting so the current tenants still have a live account on the address.

I am a bit wary of Utility Warehouse - I don't need/want any of the other services and it does seem like a pyramid scheme or something...

It's just causing me so much anxiety - I'm not moving until 5 Sep and I want to know that I'll be able to afford to feed the kids!

Add to that not having school places sorted out yet and it's all going swimmingly so far!!!!!!
