Strangers to Yorkshire is it better to rent here or travel in by train??

Travel in by train from where?

pudsey is fine, white collar and trades but few professionals although that is changing a bit

it isn’t the buzzing heart of the city!
there are nicer areas a short bus ride away but more expensive

what are you looking for in somewhere to live?

justasking111 · 08/08/2022 13:11

Lived in Leeds for three years want somewhere less hectic now

How can you be a stranger to Yorkshire when you lived in Leeds for 3 years 😂😂😂

BarbaraofSeville · 08/08/2022 13:13

Be aware that Pudsey train station isn't actually in Pudsey.

Whether public transport or car is best depends on whether you have parking at work, what time of day you're travelling at and exactly where you're going to/from. Local trains in the area get very very crowded and you often can't get on during rush hour.

But the roads aren't great either. We're woefully underprovided for here in terms of transport infrastructure. Cycling could be the best option if you can live under about 5 miles from work, but check for hills.

Farsley village is 'the' place to live in west Leeds at the moment.

Oh, cross posted. Good question about not knowing Leeds and the surrounding area after living here for 3 years Confused

When you're a student who spent most of those three years back home because of lockdowns or studying in one room in Leeds.

Sadly don't have a driving licence because of lockdowns tests cancelled, theory two years valid so resat and passed. First practical test date in December now

Is Pudsey that big?

I wouldnt choose pudsey if young and single. Horsforth is handy for Pudsey

Is Pudsey that big?

Well it doesn’t really have a well defined area and estate agents tend to let it sprawl

Thank you will check that out too. Public transport is essential though

I live quite close and would call anywhere between the Owlcotes Centre and Fulneck side 'Pudsey' and according to Google Maps, they're over 2 miles apart, so about a 40 minute walk, so definitely something to consider when deciding where to live and where the bus/train goes.

BarbaraofSeville · 08/08/2022 13:35

But budget also needs to be a consideration. It's all very well recommending Horsforth and Headingley, but the cost, especially when adding on the cost of bus fares, is considerably higher than Pudsey itself, so needs to be factored in.

It could well be that the OP won't have any money left to enjoy Horsforth or Headingley after paying rent there and travelling to her job in Pudsey, whereas if she lived in Pudsey or somewhere like Farsley, her disposable income could be at least £2/300 more a month.

Jansobieski · 08/08/2022 13:49

Am a bit 🙄that there are only a smattering of professionals in pudsey tbh …

It is nurses and teachers not doctors and lawyers

It is also very much white van man- plumbers and builders with their own businesses

look at the demographic data- that is what it says

Travel costs will be low as monthly passes are fixed particularly if under 25.

rentsl depends on if op wants a share or their own rental . Kirkstall is nearby and a popular area for houses shares for recent graduates

Drinkingpop · 08/08/2022 14:49

Living in Headingley and getting the 91 bus sounds like hard work. Kirkstall/Bramley/Farsley better?

BarbaraofSeville · 08/08/2022 15:05

Yes, but this is Mumsnet. No sacrifice is too great to avoid living somewhere where some of your neighbours might own a van or are only nurses or teachers not doctors or lawyers.

cemma · 08/08/2022 15:10

Farsley has been mentioned in national newspapers as one of the best up and coming places to live in Yorkshire .. close to new Pudsey station, canal, cycle lane, bars etc

bumpytrumpy · 08/08/2022 15:16

New Pudsey train station is actually closer to Stanningley / Farsley than it is to Pudsey.

You need to look at where your actual workplace is on a map and where the public transport options are.

I work in Pudsey (or at least, I do on my one day a week in the office) but travel in by car. Would definitely prefer to live out of area and commute in than rent in Pudsey itself. Bus and train links seem to be reasonably regular.
