How often for duvet cleaning

Boyfriend can't understand why I want to get the duvet cleaned.

I want to because it's looking a bit manky and it hasn't been done for a couple of years Shock

I read somewhere that much of the weight of an old duvet is actually skin and dust mites. Can this be true?

Whst kind of duvet is it?
If it's a tenner to wash and dry in the launderette then just do it, it hardly needs discussion.
Dont you use covers, which would probably catch the skin, mites etc before touching the duvet.
Note, I know nothing about mites, and I don't want to either, I'd never sleep again.

I used to buy a new one every year when I was younger, but now I've got a proper feather one I get it cleaned via a dry cleaner once or twice a year. Pillows I machine clean every month or so - depending on the season (more in summer!). Definitely does need cleaning, you sweat and shed in your sleep - even with a duvet cover that is making its way into your duvet. Tell him he's the manky one! (Great word btw 😂)

It's a good quality one, needs to be done by dry cleaner.

Yes, it's used with a duvet cover and I do change that weekly.

I'm off to the cleaners with it now Grin

Mine is Hungarian goose down. I put it in wash and in this heat it dries really quickly?
I've not come across one that can't be washed in a machine.
I did my daughters, it's quite old and I must admit I just assumed it was yellow! I felt ashamed when it came out pure White.

Summer weight- at the end of summer
Winter weight-at the end of winter

We use a duvet protector between the duvet and the duvet cover. Ours is a 13 tog superking size so doesn't fit in our washing machine. I take it to the dry cleaner's twice a year.

We clean our duvets before we pack them away. So each duvet (summer/winter) is cleaned once a year after about six months use.

They’re also refreshed on the line outside in the sun every so often during use to keep them fresh and to help kill any lingering bacteria. Bedding is changed once a week as a matter of course, then more often as needed if it’s hot and sweaty or other such circumstances.

Airing in the sun is a good idea. I do that with pillows but never thought of doing the duvet.

Mine is wool, cant even be dry cleaned let alone normal wash in a machine.
I actually stick it on the line on sunny days, about 3 times a year.
Allergic to feathers, and the cheap quilts make me sweat horribly since menopause.

Anyway op glad you sorted yours out. Enjoy the clean quilt.

13 tog superking once a year just before it goes back on the bed. Costs about £25 at a cheaper launderette, because of its size costs a lot more at a few local ones. 4 tog superking duvet fits in washing machine and dryer so do it ourselves once a year.

Beebumble2 · 08/08/2022 18:57

We have a feather and down duvet, washed every year. It is not a good idea to dry clean then because of the chemicals used in the cleaning process.

Winter weight-at the end of winter

Same

The summer one fits in the washing machine. The winter one gets washed at the launderette.
