No energy bill for 2 years

I'm not going to report this but not sure how right it is. Friend moved house 2 years ago and has never had an energy bill. Part of me thinks, good for her, the energy companies are ripping us off. The other part thinks, the rest of us are paying for her consumption. She says she'll never have to pay it because they can only charge up to 6 months areas from the point at which you contact them.

@RainCloud wouldn’t you just be pleased for her?! You said yourself you wish you weren’t paying for bills.

Stand up for the people not the companies creaming it!

I deliberately started my OP with the words "I'm not going to report this". As I know how some posters read selectively.

I'm asking the question is it right or wrong in theory?

@RainCloud sorry - in answer to your question I think it’s fine. If they can’t bill correctly that’s their issue. I personally would have to tell the company I hadn’t had a bill but I admire anyone who could just carry on without doing that, I’d be too worried!

my parents actually didn’t pay a bill for six years for gas and hadn’t noticed (they have enough money not to) and they reported it immediately but the company said they couldn’t charge them anyways as it had been too long?!

@GetOffTheRoof

It's a terrace, around 100 years old. Pretty standard house. I'm wondering if it's somehow fallen off the energy suppliers radar in the past due to a supplier change, being empty or something.

The reason I mention it being old is that years ago I new some people in new build flats and they didn't get billed for a couple of years because the energy companies didn't recognise the address. I think they all got about 18 months electricity for free.

She needs to save 12 months worth of gas payments incase they realise and bill her for 12 months arrears.

I don't think they can. According to the link another PP posted. The energy co will have to prove they've sent her bills. She'll have to pay if they send a bill, addressed to her to her address.

I didn't pay any gas for 2 years as the account was shipperless. Absolute bliss and I obviously said nout once the grid confirmed it for me.
EON started trying ot charge me at one point but I told them to go away and then when we decided to sell I did get them to sort it out.

Sometimes in life nice things happen.

Energy company can’t bill for more than 12 months if they haven’t issued a bill - see backbilling rules, however, I’m not sure if she’d need to prove she tried to make contact to rectify it. Good luck to her I say.

Actually I tell a lie it was a lot longer than 2 years that was when Eon got in touch is was about 5 odd years as we actually got a refund for what we had paid out

I lived in a house for 5 years and never got a gas bill. Happy days!
