My dad has been diagnosed with prostate cancer

My lovely dad was diagnosed on Friday.

He’s 61, very fit and active and went to the doctors for something unrelated. The doctor took bloods and it was found that way - I’m not sure what the score was but after biopsies he’s been given a Gleason score of 7 and opted for removal but it can’t be done until November.

I am so scared and keep going between thinking he’ll be ok to being terrified that he’s going to die.

Ive been awake since 4am, I’ve got to tell my son when he is home later and I feel sick. They are incredibly close and my son is very anxious so I know he will expect the worst.

Does anyone have any positive stories please?

My uncle had prostate cancer and passed away earlier this year.
He had lived with it for about 15 years before he died from it.
My best wishes to your father

I'm so sorry to hear about your Uncle, dying from Prostste cancer is extremely extremely unusual these days.

@YoSofi Anything like this is very worrying, but it's so treatable these days and SO slow growing. My close friends Dad was dx with it, they didn't even treat it as they said he would outlive it's growth. He did, he died of 'old age' and it had never caused him any issues (I think he was about 78 when diagnosed and died at 92). It was a few years ago now, so I think these days they might would treat it anyway, but it made no difference to him.

I hope you Dad does well!!

I can understand where you're at with your DS, but hopefully if you explain the very very very low chance of your Dad getting unwell, let alone dying from it, he won't be too anxious.

My cousin had it and had radiotherapy and is now on hormones tablets. He's now cancer free and back at work full time (in a hard, manual labour job)

I used to work in medical PR. I'm pretty sure the statistic is that 80% of all men over 80 who die have prostate cancer (some know, some don't) but majority die with it not of it.

It really isn't a death sentence to people of his age. Yes in your 40's its a big issue. Not so much in.your 60s.

Try not to panic OP. I know that's easier said than done. Look after yourself and DS.

Another sending you a big hug OP. That's news is the worst. My Dad (76)was diagnosed the first week of lockdown. It felt even more stressful due to timescales and the NHS being so stretched. But he's got the all clear and has made a full recovery. Back to his cantankerous self 🥰 Sending you, your Dad and family positive vibes xx
