Would you change jobs for 6000pa more?

I'm on a fixed-term contract in a job I love. I absolutely love it. And I love the fact that it's home-based. Such a nice break from decades of office politics.

They've made noises about wanting to make me permanent, but it's just that...noises. No contract yet. So at the moment I'm employed until Dec and that's it.

I applied for another job for which I thought I'd be under qualified and to my surprise the interview went well. They seemed keen. It pays about 6k pa more. It's 50% remote and 50% a short commute. More promotion opportunities too. It would start after current job ends.

I may end up with neither job of course, but let's say I end up with both offers, would it be better to stay where I am for the sake of job satisfaction and peace of mind? Or take the plunge into something new for the sake of 6000 more per annum? What would you do?

depends if that's a big raise or not. From £20k, yes. From £80k, not really jsut before a big recession unless there were other reasons to move.

Coffeetree · 05/08/2022 17:41

You're absolutely right My current job is £30k and new job £36K.

I’d speak to the current job and push for a decision on whether they’re able to make the role permanent. A 20% pay rise isn’t to be sniffed at though and presumably with development opportunities has the possibility to go higher again in the future.

Whiskers4 · 05/08/2022 17:50

I think I'd have an honest word with your current employers and explain that the situation - even if they can't put something in writing now, they might be able to confirm there's definitely a role for you. If they can't do that, they I'd seriously they about the offer

cherrybonbons · 05/08/2022 18:06

I would tell your current employers and give them an ultimatum. It just take the new job and enjoy the extra cash

This.

But if push came to shove… yes, at that salary level £6k is a significant raise, so I’d leave rather than staying.

Coffeetree · 05/08/2022 18:57

Thanks everyone. Honestly I think I was looking for a push. Opportunities should be grabbed.

I love my job and the culture of the organisation. There's lots of flexibility and I consider some of my colleagues to be real friends. Yep, I'd like to earn more but extra money is not worth risking what I have now.

PersonaNonGarter · 05/08/2022 19:26

It totally depends on what percentage of your pay £6k represents. In your case, definitely.

Maybeebebe · 05/08/2022 19:28

I would

You don't have a permanent job at the moment, I would speak to where you are explain the situation re the permanent bit but go if they don't offer

Coffeetree · 05/08/2022 22:13

Yes definitely will go if no permanent job at current place.

It's more a question of--if I get a permanent offer at current place, do I still pursue the shiny new job with more money?

It doesn't hurt to interview.

What’s the full-time salary for the current role and opportunities for promotion?

Wallywobbles · 06/08/2022 06:28

29% pay rise is pretty impressive. Don't be afraid to negotiate that up too. You'll get more respect. Also ask for a timeline on promotions.

balalake · 06/08/2022 08:31

Hope whatever you decide works out well for you. I'd be moving unless there was a very good reason not to.
