If you live near traffic lights with a pedestrian crossing…

…does it beep for the green man all through the night? Or just ‘sociable’ hours?

There’s a set near DDs nursery that always strike me as loud and I’d never thought of it but today I realised the bloke sat in the nearest house with the windows wide open (possibly WFH) looked rather peeved when they went off! Must be super irritating at night if they do…

A lot of the ones near me don't beep at all. I stand there, waiting like a lemon, then glance down and see the green man has lit up above the button without a sound.

The ones near me don't beep at night (I'm not sure what time it changes) but they have the wee twisty thing under the box that rotates so if you can't see the green man you know when it's safe to cross.

We live close to a busy junction, although it is pretty quiet after about 10pm. The green man beeps during the night if someone pushes button to use the crossing, as opposed to going off on rotation all night.

Similarly we live beside a fire and ambulance station, they don't activate sirens at night, just their lights. If I go for a wee at night, the bathroom often lights up from the silent blue lights going by

I suspect that even if they do beep after a while you don't really hear them unless you're listening for them.
Everywhere I've lived there's been some sort of noise that after a while you don't really notice, and some much louder than that.

Thank you! Sorry, very much a random thought while I was waiting at nursery. It’s just such a piercing sound, but of course I know it’s necessary for a lot of people.

I suppose you don’t notice them after a while (we live next the the railway line and I don’t notice trains anymore) but it’s a quiet area so I imagine it’d be waking me if I was sleeping with the windows open like we have been for the last few months.

Yes to you not noticing the trains in the same way.
Growing up we lived near a military air base. The planes going off at night didn't wake us, even if you got several in quick succession as you sometimes did. Even during the day we were so used to them going over we barely noticed.
But staying at my grandparents which had a train line at the bottom of the garden, the trains woke me every night!
