Where is your happy place?

When the going gets tough, where do you go to and what do you think about to escape from it all a little bit?

Work (NHS) is busy and stressful right now. The news is doom and gloom. Not to mention the cost of living and how much that is playing on my mind. I've therefore made a conscious effort recently to go for walks outside in the fresh air, headphones on listening to feel-good music.
Mentally, I'm starting to think about the lead up to Christmas (my favorite time of year), not necessarily the expense but getting excited to be reunited with friends and family again who I don't see very often, excited for all the pretty lights and the smell of cinnamon and spiced apples. So those are the things which are keeping me going right now!

Everyone is different and it got me thinking; where is your happy place? Where do you go to (mentally or physically) as escapism from the current world?

By the sea. It doesn’t matter how bad the weather is, it clears my head and I can breathe properly.

If I don’t have time or can’t get out, I watch the full Christmas in a day ad that Sainsbury’s did a few years ago. It’s about 30 minutes and it makes me happy. I know it’s sad but I don’t care.

Mayleez · 04/08/2022 19:43

To the sea. I'm lucky enough to live on the coast - half an hour sitting on the cliffs or the beach listening to the waves and staring out across the Atlantic helps put things into perspective.

Mol1628 · 04/08/2022 19:44

Swimming pool. Preferably when it’s quiet.

MolliciousIntent · 04/08/2022 19:45

The bath!

meow1989 · 04/08/2022 19:46

Another sea one - sitting preferably on a pebble beach and zoning out the the waves and seagulls. And the rule is you have to dip a toe in.

More locally, my garden - 10 mins wandering, pulling up to odd weed, deadheading. Enough to clear my head.

My most peaceful place is falling asleep next to ds (4) snuggled up.

My bedroom with a book, it needs to be a good page turner, nothing too heavy so I can get totally lost in the story.

Also yoga, but a class rather than at home, a good way to relax and turn of my mind.

NHS here too, in a job I mostly hate. Love patient care but not enough of that in my current job.

I feel the need to get away to truly detach and unwind. Doesn’t need to be fancy, we are going to a seaside premier inn for one night next weekend. It’s probably only when I am away that I genuinely don’t check my emails and feel properly off duty.

I live near the sea so going for a swim does help too.

I crochet so that can help but can’t detach enough to concentrate right now which is a shame.

Absolutely nothing sad about this! Sounds like perfect escapism to me (I also watch old Christmas ads on YouTube!)

Cuddle up with my cat, some crap telly and a nice mug of fancy hot chocolate.

CentralPerk18 · 04/08/2022 20:07

The bath - glass of wine, door locked, candles, leave my phone outside, watching a trashy TV show on my tablet. I have been in there 2 hours before!

tvod2244 · 04/08/2022 20:12

These are all so lovely, and I'm also getting some ideas of new things to try too - swimming in the sea sounds fantastic and no doubt incredibly therapeutic!

Swimming underwater does something physiological which calms me right down. Unfortunately, and ironically, I get very anxious at the thought of getting in and out of the pool, so I haven’t been for ages.

Watching and listening the sea ebb and flow is very calming.

Jalisco · 04/08/2022 20:25

Buffy. Last two episodes of season 3.

silkiechicks · 04/08/2022 20:25

I don't live by the sea, but my happy place has to be in the garden, sitting and watching my pet chickens they always make me happy and something that I just enjoy, especially with what's going on at the moment with cost of living ect......

grayhairdontcare · 04/08/2022 21:17

Sitting by the canal and watching the birds and nature and switching off for a couple of hours

MrsDThomas · 05/08/2022 07:11

A mountain. Im in Snowdonia but tend to keep off snowdon if its summer and nice -too busy with the flip flop brigade and nordic walking sticks. Ill happily go on a wet miserable day

plenty of others available which they don’t want to visit which is great!

Mummadeze · 05/08/2022 07:15

I play tennis. It takes my mind off absolutely everything. If I am at home, any reality dating show does the trick for me. And if I am alone in my thoughts and feeling stressed, I start deciding how I will spend my lottery win which always helps.

Mummadeze · 05/08/2022 07:16

My happiest place is Disney, so I also visit it in my head when I am upset.

Seaweasel · 05/08/2022 07:24

Wherever my cat is. Smoothing her and hearing her trill is mood-changing.

Thoughtsarrivelikebutterflies5 · 05/08/2022 07:29

My room/bed with books. Or the library.

forlornlorna1 · 05/08/2022 07:35
