What on earth do I order?!

Going to a Japanese restaurant with friends I haven't seen for ages.

I've had a look at the menu and I have NO idea what to order. I've never been to a Japanese place before.

What's the norm - how many sushi pieces are considered polite for 1 person? Do you order several dishes? What goes with what?

Help!

This is the menu:

Just treat it a bit like Wagamamas.
I expect the table will get a selection of sushi to start / share then pick a main like a ramen or a donburi to have yourself as a main

I think it’s absolutely fine to ask for guidance when you’re there. When I’ve been out for sushi, we’ve ordered as a table and shared.

Ramen is a good plan if you’re going to individual mains.

Order vegetarian sushi. You don't want to risk getting parasites.

Well, it all looks bloody lovely.

I’d go for edamame, tempura starter, katsy curry, apple gyoza (desert).

I am envious! Enjoy!

cherrypiepie · 04/08/2022 18:50

As PP said usually a platter of sushi or appetisers and then a main.

Do you like sushi? Raw fish? I LOVE sushi.

Gyoza are lovely savoury dumplings and not met a person who doesn't like them.

Donburi (rice meat and sauce) is a safe bet but the eel would be a step to far for me (probably delicious).

Teriyaki is usually meat in Kebab a stick grilled in a dark savoury sauce

Katsu is a v.mild curry served with breaded fried chicken and rice

Ramen is noodle soup broth

Yaki Udon is a bit like chow mein.

Now transported back 13 years when I went to Japan 🇯🇵

cherrypiepie · 04/08/2022 18:52

I did not see the apple gyoza @Afonavon

BryceQuinlanTheFirst · 04/08/2022 18:58

I would probably get some bao buns, a salad and some chicken skewers or one of the sushi options.

I don't think it's strange to ask how many items people typically order though. It ends up so expensive!

I'd choose something from the 'Large plates' section as not a big fan of sushi

The Chashu Ramen or chashu Yaki Soba

The teriyaki beef sirloin

The Buta Don Donburi

DuesToTheDirt · 04/08/2022 19:03

I'd say the 'large plates' are just for you, but for the rest, try and share with people. They say how many pieces you get, and it's not just about how much you will eat but getting a variety. I imagine you wouldn't necessarily want 5 or 8 of the same thing, when you could share with the rest of the group and get, say 1 or 2 each of 4 things. The mixed platters look like they're aimed at sharing too, or you could have one by yourself.

Thank you so much!

I feel a bit clearer now, trouble is now just to pick...

That menu looks amazing. Wish we were having Japanese food tonight!

happysunr1se · 04/08/2022 19:31

My favourites off that menu would be eel in any form (it's seared, so not raw, in a sticky sweet sauce) kabocha korroke, salmon sashimi, scallop sashimi, salmon roe, nasu dengaku, ebi tempura, agedashi tofu, anything with gomae dressing and tsukimono. I love anything sesame flavour.

If there was sea urchin gunkan (uni), that's my absolute favourite.

Bao buns r ok (bao means bun in cantonese, so they are called bun-buns?) But they ain't Japanese. Then again "cha siu" is Cantonese too. Means roast pork. Ramen is chinese too, derives from the words lei mein. When I was in Japan a lot of the ramen restaurants were loosely chinese styled even down to the big ramen bowls and pottery spoons with traditional chinese patterns on them and they call it the chinese words "cha siu" too, whereas in japanese it could be something like buta yaki . Isn't it interesting, the mix of cultures and cuisines!

Anyway I digress, to fit more in I suggest to go easy on the rice based sushi rolls and go for more sashimi and side dishes followed by a bento box which will have rice in it anyway.

karmakameleon · 04/08/2022 19:39

We have a kibou near us and it’s gorgeous! You can’t much go wrong.

I like their cocktails. We usually order everything to share. Edamame, gyoza, a selection of sushi and then a main course or two depending on how hungry we are.

Whadda · 04/08/2022 19:41

That menu looks so good- enjoy, OP!

I haven’t had my dinner yet and now I just want Japanese food.

The afternoon tea option looks fantastic.
