Neighbour watched tv in my house

We have been neighbours for over a decade and get on well and have always pet sat (pop in a few times a week level) for each other. I just came back from a two week holiday and noticed that either she or her teenage DD had logged into the YouTube account on my television.
Feeling a bit odd that one of them was making themselves at home in my house. Do I say something? Find a way to get my key back politely? Or assume that teenager wanted some space away from mum and ignore?

I'd have to say something

Ducksallovertheplace · 04/08/2022 12:13

I’d probably mention it, it was likely the teen and they need pulling up on that. Seems a shame to ruin a reciprocal pet feeding agreement but if they’re reasonable they’ll be suitably apologetic

BrimFullOfAsher · 04/08/2022 12:15

I couldn't get worked up over this.

Non issue for me

Runningslow · 04/08/2022 12:15

Were they feeding a cat? If they watched tv to give the cat a bit of company for a couple of hours a day I’d be fine. If they just used it as an extra lounge then I wouldn’t.

changzi · 04/08/2022 12:17

I'd ignore (it was surely the teen) but would also make a point of setting clearer boundaries next time you ask them for help.

Clymene · 04/08/2022 12:21

Well isn't it better if they're hanging out with your pet?

Unless it's a goldfish or something

And if you're not paying them, then they may tell you they won't do it in future.

I pay my cat sitter £6/visit

We occasionally pet sit for a neighbour. When she had her first holiday a couple of months after getting a new kitten we did spend a while sitting in her house to give the kitten a bit of fuss. Even now he is four years older, if he lets me know he want my company, then I will sit with him for a bit. I’m quite happy sitting with no tv on, but I think it’s fine in this situation to switch it on for a while.
Pet sitting isn’t a always a case of run in, throw food in a bowl and leave, sometimes interaction with the pet is needed too.

grapehyacinthisactuallyblue · 04/08/2022 13:08

If you have allowed them in to your house to feed your pets or whatever, I don't see any big deal about it tbh.

SaltySeaWitch · 04/08/2022 13:13

I can’t say I’d get worked up about this. We have a good relationship with NDN and help each other out. I know he’d be fine if I’d sat with his pets and watched TV and vice versa. I occasionally pop by and make a fuss of the dog (or even bring him over to ours) if I know he’s popped out for a few hours and can hear the dog whining.

hedgehoglurker · 04/08/2022 13:18

2 weeks is a long holiday for the pet to be alone without companionship visits, which is what I would assume they were doing and be grateful for.

If they were relaxing in your bath, drinking your wine, eating your favourite treats and/ or sleeping in your bed, that would be different...

I have noticed TV picking up a YouTube account if the person connected to same wifi not necessarily the actual device. Actually I didn't investigate to verify they were connected to wifi but assumed. As in room on device next to the room TV in.
Could it be that they watching YouTube on their phone in your garden/house or possibly connected as neighbors?

mylittleyumyum · 04/08/2022 14:16

My neighbour did it when kitten-sitting for us and I was really pleased that she'd spent the time with her.

WhereTheLightningBugsBlaze · 04/08/2022 15:00

Two weeks is a very long time for a pet to be left with someone just popping in, I’d be pleased they’d had some company for a while.

unless it’s a snail or something!

Tearsofthemushroom · 04/08/2022 15:01

Quite a mixed bag! The pet is a reptile so no company needed. We are feeding her cat in return for this next week. Looked at our electric usage and I don’t think that she was spending hours a day so I will probably leave it and assume that my sofas are more comfortable!

Were they actually pet sitting? If they were, you're being a bit odd, if they weren't and literally came into your house uninvited because they happened to have a key; they're being cheeky.
Which was it?

Johnnysgirl · 04/08/2022 15:04

Oh, x post. Yeah, complete non issue.

I'm completely opposite. I'd be furious.

Pet sitting a reptile does not require watching TV. I think it's extremely rude.

How long would the visit take, though? Is there cage cleaning involved, for example? It doesn't seem much of a crime to have something on in the background if it takes 20 minutes or more.

Blanketpolicy · 04/08/2022 16:25

tbh it would make me uncomfortable. It is a question of trust. If they had asked I would have said it was ok, but doing it without asking/checking is presumptuous and shows they are either not trustworthy or have different ideas of what is acceptable than I do.

I would consider it rude to use my home without asking for permission and I would wonder what else they would consider acceptable to do in my home that I wouldn't. Maybe having a poke through kitchen cupboards/drawers etc is ok to them?

RedBonnet · 12/08/2022 12:04

Not an issue for me but I wouldn't give key to someone I didn't trust.

BEAM123 · 12/08/2022 12:07

Watching TV wouldn't bother me but something like a YouTube account is more personal as it has your watch history etc....I mean I have nothing to hide but would still feel slightly uncomfortable at that...

HappyHamsters · 12/08/2022 12:11

I wouldnt mind the tv but would be concerned if they have had access to your wifi to watch youtube
