DD14 Persistent Dandruff Problem

Anyone got any solutions or recommendations to deal with a persistent dandruff problem in teen daughter? Its been a life-long condition, she even suffered from terrible cradle cap as a baby.
We were using the Neutrogena T-Gel shampoo which seemed to improve things but 18 months down the line its no longer as effective. Daughter also complains that her hair gets greasy quickly after washing.

Does anyone know of anything worth trying? I'm not sure whether best to consult a GP or pharmacist about medicated shampoos or if I should try something OTC first.

I have good results with Head&Shoulders, although you’ve maybe already tried that

Sadly H&S doesn't seem to help. We were using that with no success so moved to the T-Gel, which definitely helped for a while there but sadly isn't as effective anymore. At 14 years old, its a problem which she is very aware of and makes her self conscious. She has the most beautiful long dark hair but this really upsets her.

I have a persistent spot of this on the crown on my head tried all the usual shampoos then I tried using a shampoo bar from Brand Zero, a small natural skincare company.

It worked a treat, there's still a tiny bit left on my scalp not nearly as bad as it was.

I prefer the lavender one but have tried some of the others and they are all lovely.

Before anyone asks ... I don't work for them.

Nizoral. It's been a while since I've had to buy any, but it was around £6-7 for a tiny bottle of it but it's deceptive as you only need to use a tiny amount of it once a week or so. But it's absolutely brilliant - I used it for DS1's cradle cap and it never returned and he's now 8.

Try the body shop ginger shampoo and make sure her hair is thoroughly dried afterwards. It's the only method that works for me.

Thanks, I had a quick look on Amazon there and the reviews are good. I've ordered a bottle and will give it a try.

We used nizoral recommended by the pharmacist it cleared dd1 dandruff and now we just maintain with head and shoulders.

Another vote here for Body Shop Ginger shampoo and conditioner - they also do a ginger serum you can put straight on your scalp

Turquoisa80 · 04/08/2022 12:55

I had dandrazol from the doctor but you can buy it over the counter and it cleared my problem dandruff which I had on and off for years. No I use head and shoulders and use that when I need to.

DS used www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07HRXLZKN/ref=ox_sc_saved_image_2?smid=A25ILVPTWR5YSO&psc=1 and it worked brilliantly for him. Cleared the dandruff and left him with lovely soft hair. DS was standing in a group of friends when one of them, a girl, brushed against his head and mentioned how soft his hair was. He started washing it on a nightly basis Grin

If it works for your DD, get another bottle as they seem to be available for £6 and then not available anywhere for less than £15, so I tend to buy it when I can buy it reasonably priced.

Aplecin dandruff killer shampoo!

Tried loads with DD: Head and shoulders, tgel, body shop ginger one. None worked then the doctor recommended this.

RandomMess · 04/08/2022 13:00

Has she been checked for psoriasis?

TheYearOfSmallThings · 04/08/2022 13:01

Nizoral works, but strips colour and dries hair. The Body Shop Ginger doesn't work for me. Vichy Dercos works but smells very strong, and Redken Scalp Relief Dandruff works and doesn't strip colour.

Selsun is really good but expensive, keeps the greasiness at bay too.

dormouses · 04/08/2022 13:05

Selsun works really well, my DD gets it on prescription.

Drywhitefruitycidergin · 04/08/2022 13:06

Dd1 is 11 & kids vosene works for her. Strangely the adult version i had to buy when kids was unavailable was not as effective.

SillyBub · 04/08/2022 13:24

Another recommendation for Body Shop Ginger shampoo. I've been using it for years and years after every other dandruff shampoo stopped working after a while. 12yo DD started suffering from greasy hair with build up over a year ago so I suggested she tried it and her hair and scalp have been totally fine since.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 04/08/2022 13:27

Nizarol is the only thing that works for mine. I spent a fortune on them all and that’s the only one that does it.

bumpertobumper · 04/08/2022 13:29

Try shampoo with no SLS, like faith in nature.
SLS is the foaming agent in most shampoo, I am sensitive to it an always get dandruff if I use shampoo with it in, but not without.
I also avoid hand wash with it in as give me eczema on my hands - fine now and again but not for regular use.

On a similar note, the same stuff is inmost toothpaste and for everyone is irritating for mouth ulcers. If you have an ulcer get toothpaste without SLS, many to chose in health food shop. They clear up much more quickly.
