We have a day at end of August in Stoke-on-trent. Teenage dc loves art/ceramics. We are avid watchers of The Great Pottery Showdown. Could anyone recommend a day out there? Is the world of wedgwood worth going to?

Thanks in advance

I haven't been to the World of Wedgwood so I can't comment on that. But I know that the Emma Bridgwater factory and the Burleigh Pottery - the two places where the shows are filmed, are worth visiting. There's also the Gladstone museum in Longton that's interesting if you like pottery. These are all spread across the city so you'll need a car. But all worth a visit IMO.

She can do her own decorating at Emma Bridgewater but you'll need to book in advance for that.

Yes, but it’s quite a long way out. I’d go to the Gladstone. I think there’s more hands on possibilities

I've not been to Wedgewood, looks very slick. I have been to Middleport, is small and a lot less glossy but has a lot of history. You can learn about how the workers would make the pottery and even stand in the old biscuit oven and they offer production line tours during the week. Be warned the pottery itself is £££ to buy.

Emma Bridgwater is probably a must. There is also the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery in Hanley, haven't been there for years mind.

Hanley itself is pretty run down now I'm afraid. If you do go across to Wedgewood then Trentham Estate is pretty close to there and that is a nice day out. Barlaston (where Wedgewood is) is quite a distance from Hanley though.

I didn't know it was filmed at Emma Bridgewater, thank you. Will check it out

I went to Wedgwood with DC it’s very interesting and for £10 iirc you can throw your own pot and they’ll send it to you (unglazed). I use the one DD made as my pencil pot.
I was interested in seeing their workers’ village but that wasn’t available. There was a nice seconds outlet selling Johnson as well as Wedgwood and a tea shop using their china, too.

Yes, I think the first series was filmed at EB and then the later series moved to Burleigh at Middleport.

The factory tour is very good at EB and good cafe. Seconds shop good if you like the pottery. Can paint a pot as well.

Middle port pottery has a cafe beside the canal & some small independent shops as well as the main pottery. I believe that Peaky Blinders was filmed here too.

The Wedgewood factory has a tour & pottery museum & larger cafe.
