What is the best rom com book you've read?

I am going to have a shot at writing a rom com novel. I love writing and write short skits all the time. I am really good at writing individual scenes and making them funny.

The problem I have is that I am really bad at coming up with a really interesting plot.

I would like to write a rom com about a woman who moves to a beach abroad for a summer with a friend to work in a hotel. I have done this very thing so I have loads of material but nothing on a story line, more funny scenes in a hotel.

Does anyone have any ideas that don't feel really cliche? I love Bridget jones but I do feel it is now a little outdated and I'm not sure what modern twist I could have.

Classic rom coms follow the pattern of boy gets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl.

What is the best rom com plot line you have scene?
Can you inspire me with story line ideas?

All lighthearted, please no hate

Read Karen Swann. I am sure she even has one with a similar plot

Surely if people reply to this, it's based on something that already exists.

The rom-com story arc is quite clearly defined, as you say.

The novelty comes from new situations, inventive & relatable characters & sharp writing.

All of that needs to come from you.

I like a few of Jennifer Crusie's books, especially Welcome to Temptation, Lie to Me and Bet Me. They're not comedy books but they have great one liners. I also like Ain't She Sweet by Susan Elizabeth Phillips, again snappy, funny dialogue more than funny situations. Both authors do fantastic romance with strong women and fanciable men.

US writer Elinor Lipman. Sharp dialogue, ordinary people, good plots. Marketed as chick lit but much more than that. Or Jane Austen, obviously.

They say to write well you need to read a lot.

Try Beth O’Leary, Helly Acton, Laura Jane Williams for some really modern Rom-com type books. Also Sophie Kinsella.

@EarringsandLipstick I'm just looking for inspiration not to plagerize
