Is dry socket pain immediate after the blood clot goes

I had a tooth out yesterday and I am panicking that I have/am going to get dry socket. I had severe pain from the tooth before it was out (eyes, ear, sinus) that pain killers wouldn’t touch and I cannot stand the thought of going through similar or worse pain again.

The area has sunken, and there’s a whitish film forming over the top but there is also a bit of grey. I don’t think I can see a blood clot but honestly, I’m not overly sure what I’m looking for and google isn’t helping.

I’m too scared to open my mouth fully incase that causes the blood clot to pop too, so I’m not really getting a good look.

Should it look the same as it did shortly after the extraction? Big dark red gap?

I know I sound ridiculous but I am terrified of the pain coming back, when it was at its worst I just howled for 6 hours straight and I can usually just silently fight through pain but this was something else. I want to cry just thinking about.

Would it hurt straight away if the blood clot has gone? Am I supposed to just wait and see if I get severe pain or should I get it checked by a dentist?

Ooh. Marking place, as mine is so far back I can't even see it.

Have you been advised to rinse out with salted water on a regular basis ?

PureBlackVoid · 03/08/2022 21:26

Yes after 24 hours which I have done.

I cant see a dark red blob at all and I’m so scared the pain is coming!

I also get a weird salty taste (before I startwd rinsing out), a bit like blood but there isn’t any blood. I’m also worried this is the ‘foul taste’ that you get when you have DS 😭

Where is your mouth was the tooth removed from?

MaxOverTheMoon · 03/08/2022 21:33

Are you in pain OP?

I had dry socket and it was awful, naproxan, codeine and ice packs helped till the dentist saw me. If you're in pain go to the dentist, they put a natural sort of filling in that numbs the area and keeps it covered.

RainyDays22 · 03/08/2022 21:33

Yes, the pain starts within hours of the blood clot going.

lrosey · 03/08/2022 21:34

You will know if you have DS. The taste and smell is indescribable! I didn’t have too much pain with it but the taste gave it away for me.

GinIronic · 03/08/2022 21:37

Never rinse after after an extraction as you will rinse the blood clot away - <<bitter experience >>. See a dentist asap.

....and yet both the OP's dentist and my dentist advised us both to do that, after leaving it for 24 hours......

MaxOverTheMoon · 03/08/2022 21:41

I didn't know I had dry socket. I rang the dental hospital after the first day and they said because I could talk I didn't have it and I would know if I had it. Spent the rest of the day with it getting worse and it then kept me awake at night. The next day my dentist fitted me in but not till the evening, by then I 100% knew I had it but wish I had rang my dentist the day before!

PureBlackVoid · 03/08/2022 21:42

No, I don’t have any pain yet except for a bit of ‘normal’ soreness, and there’s almost a tightening sensation in my gums? It’s my lower jaw at the back.

The taste I’m getting is like salty/coppery - is that how DS tastes?

The toothache I had originally was honestly so traumatic, any inkling of pain in that region since then just makes my legs go like jelly.

It’s just the white/greyish film and lack of dark red lump that is making me panic

Well @Kite22 and @GinIronic you are both correct ! You need to rinse the area VERY gently - and after 24
Hours

lrosey · 03/08/2022 21:45

Yes it was like a salty taste, but like nothing I’ve ever tasted before (and hope to never taste again!) I’m sorry to say but I did have a grey area when I had DS (but it could be unrelated so don’t panic). If I were you I would get it checked - I know it’s an expense and horrid but will hopefully set your mind at rest. If it is DS they will stuff it with something and clove oil, it really helps!

A dry socket doesn’t usually develop in the first 48hrs. Your description of the socket sounds normal. The main feature of a dry socket is intense pain. Probably worse than the pain before you had the extraction. A healing socket will be sore, respond to painkillers and the pain will gradually get better over a few days. If after a couple of days the pain is getting worse ( a good way of judging this is does it wake you up and prevent sleep).
To help avoid a dry socket follow the post op instructions you have been given. Use salt water to bath the socket, makeup the salt water as instructed and take a mouthful and hold it over the socket, do not rinse it around. Don’t go over the top with the salt water, after meals and before bed is usually sufficient.
It also helps in the first 24hrs not to have very cold or very hot foods or drinks.

uhtredsonofuhtred1 · 03/08/2022 21:57

I had a dry socket. Jesus Christ it was more painful than the original toothache!!

Mine came on straight away but due to an obvious cause. It was quite near the back of my mouth and when I got home I gently removed the cotton pads they placed there as I was instructed to. It made me wretch badly which dislodged the blood clot.

DueyCheatemAndHow · 03/08/2022 21:59

I was absolutely paranoid that I was developing DS but I didn't and it was fine. If you aren't in agony, take it as a good sign.

PattyMelt · 03/08/2022 22:06

Mine started the next day after extraction. I sneezed really hard, I felt the clot come out. All I could see was grey in the hole. I followed the salt rinse instructions but by day three I had to go back it was agony. They packed it with something that stunk of clove oil (the smell made me gag) But it worked.

postitnot · 03/08/2022 22:43

Don't worry, the grey that you can see is completely normal, it's like when you have a scab on your knee and you go swimming-just a wet scab.
If painkillers are helping it's not a dry socket, like PP said, very gentle rinsing just after food will be fine

PureBlackVoid · 03/08/2022 22:50

Thanks all. I’ve been googling like mad and pictures made it seem like the big red lump should still be there at the top, the way it is just after extraction and any mention of grey brings up dry socket!

Omg please can anyone help I’m day 7 after my extraction I haven’t had any pain but this evening I’m experimenting a mild throbbing pain and I have checked my tooth and I’m not sure if it is healing correctly or if I am getting dry socket

Workyticket · 18/08/2022 22:18

I had a tooth out yesterday morning - the dentist didn't say anything about rinsing or care in any way

I'm eating and drinking as normal - it's a bit tender in the extraction region but I've not paid it any attention

It's right at the back so can't see much.

Did anyone else just erm, do nothing and it be OK??

Oinkypig · 18/08/2022 23:16

@Frankielxo you don’t have dry socket at day 7 you might have a bit of food or something in there it’s hard to say from that picture, you might have a bit of localised inflammation but you should be fine.

@Workyticket they really should have given you some instructions! but generally most people are fine after a straight forward extraction. Just don’t some after having a tooth out!
