Just that really. What were you put here to do?

Be happy.

I’m Christian so mine is linked to my beliefs but yes, I do think I have a purpose.

Some days I’m not sure what it is exactly, but generally I believe I’m on this planet because I can help others, have a good influence on people, be nice to those around me basically. It’s not a purpose as much as a responsibility, but each and every human is also here to take care of the world we live in.

I believe in heaven - don’t go preaching it to others - but I also believe part of God’s plan is for me to lead by example and attract others to Him, so that more people will be saved when He comes back to Earth to take us home.

Worship the One true God, without associating partners with Him. In return for ever lasting paradise.

I have felt, at times, that my purpose is to push on no matter what life throws at me. To be the strong one. I made myself quite ill and hopefully have a more measure approach.

ThisIsntDanicaBritannica · 03/08/2022 22:05

I don’t have a religious belief, if anything I have a Buddhist outlook - the Goddess of Compassion Kwan Yin appeals to me.
For as long as I can remember I’ve had the feeling that I was put here to help. For almost all my working life I’ve worked as a carer for young disabled people, adults and children. They taught me far more about humanity, compassion, grace and life in general than I can express!
The irony is, of course, I am terrible at applying the principles of kindness and compassion to myself. I have two personality disorders and a recent diagnosis of CPTSD ( awful childhood- mother who had NO empathy!)
I feel other peoples emotions very strongly, I can often ‘feel’ when people are upset or ill ( not necessarily woo - just the weighing up of teeny tiny bits of information like body language, facial expressions etc).
I realise I need to help myself first before I can help anyone else, I just wish it was as easy to do as it is to type!

Are you saying God is so picky that he’s only going to save the ones who believe in him? He doesn’t like his humans much then.

Babdoc · 03/08/2022 22:15

Claudius, it’s the other way round! God has invited all humans to accept His love and enjoy eternal life. He came here in the form of Jesus and willingly suffered a horrific torture and death at our hands, to demonstrate that love.
It’s atheists who refuse the invitation and reject Him - they are free to make that choice, if they prefer oblivion. He doesn’t force anyone to believe.

Have you tried picturing yourself as a child? It’s easier to feel sympathy and want to help yoyr young self. That might gelp a little.

I'm not religious. What is the difference between a 'higher' purpose and your every day purpose?

sunshine277 · 03/08/2022 22:19

It's metaphorical really.

God = Goodness

You choose goodness or not.

Do goodness you are rewarded. Do bad things, you're punished.... Best way to think of it if you don't believe in God. And if you don't believe there is a big man in the sky, I bet you would always choose to be a good person rather than a bad one. Let's leave it there ;)

Hbh17 · 03/08/2022 22:19

No. We are born, we breathe in and out for a few years, and then we die. Zero purpose or significance because we are merely organic matter. The whole thing is incredibly reassuring because it tells us that none of us is important and nothing that happens to us is of any significance.

Silvercatowner · 03/08/2022 22:19

Be nice. Be mindful of happiness and well-being - your own and those around you.

He’s going to save those who have chosen to believe in Him and follow Him. God doesn’t force you to do this, it’s why He gave free will to all human beings.

Everyone gets a chance/s to choose what to do with their lives. He won’t only save Bible-abiding Christians. There will be many people of different cultures, beliefs and religions, or none, there.

MugginsOverEre · 03/08/2022 22:28

People in general? To evolve as a species and see how far we get. I'm hoping Star Trek Federation level tech and social consciousness in our future but it'll probably just be planetary ruination and warning beacons in orbit placed alien species and tales told to alien kids at night of the horrors of that now extinct human race.

Me personally right now though? To be a mum. To bring the three most amazing, wonderful, loving, sweet, fantastic people into the world. I may be biased of course but they are pretty fucking awesome. I had no life goals or purpose except getting by being a nobody before I married and had kids.

Squirrelsnut · 03/08/2022 22:42

To not make the world a worse place, and whenever possible, to make it a better place. To help others.

BuffScrag · 03/08/2022 22:48

I think whatever beliefs we have, our purpose in a spiritual or evolutionary sense is still the same: to care for others and to build good relationships between others as far as we can. ‘Community’ in a large or small group. I know that literally biologically our only human ‘purpose’ is simple reproduction of ourselves (just like for any living thing) but we are definitely also evolved to be social animals.

I would love to feel a strong sense of purpose in how I live, that must be very satisfying, but I think it also takes a certain amount of self knowledge to find that thing and to make it a central part of your life. Personally I haven’t worked it out yet.
