9n Amazon, Absentia is a series which I wholeheartedly recommend. Also, a Korean film called Forgotten on Netflix.

irridium · 03/08/2022 20:42

I've got Amazon now, so that's not as good as Netflix, but I've watched a lot of good series and films; the rest are pants. There's nothing on there I can recommend.

Incantation?

Nolongera · 03/08/2022 20:53

Nobody.

MammaWeasel · 03/08/2022 20:54

Depends on your taste and what you fancy seeing though.

i was blown away by The Father but that may not be for you.

I also really enjoyed the series Unbelievable

feelthefear83 · 03/08/2022 21:01

The Wife currently on BBC iPlayer

Patty101 · 03/08/2022 21:03

Arrival. Not on Netflix but pretty sure its available on Amazon.

I refused to watch it for so long because it did not sound like my kind of film at all.

Couldn't stop thinking about it for days after I watched it. Loved it.

QueenImprov · 03/08/2022 21:05

Three billboards outside ebbing, Missouri is brilliant. Crime drama with dark humour.

Fizzibility · 03/08/2022 21:08

Widows on Netflix

cushioncovers · 03/08/2022 21:09

Ideal Home

Jazzapples1 · 03/08/2022 21:11

Untouchable on Netflix

PatsyJStone · 03/08/2022 21:12

Drowning Mona - dryly and daftly funny, not slapstick. Some great actors, Bette Midler, Danny Devito, Will Ferrell. Was nicely surprised

BullshitHunter · 03/08/2022 21:19

Ozarks, if you have time. A few long series, but some excellent acting.

Films...Hmm. I tend to forget them after a while. Anything by Ridley Scott is good. He takes you to those places. Christopher Nolan does too. Like Interstellar. That is a good one and Hans Zimmer skilfully blended our organised history of cathedral construction and organ music into the chaos of time and space. It is also a warning and right on time. I watched a row of cottages burn on the Norfolk coast just over two weeks ago.

Other rare gems of films:

House of Sand and Fog. Ben Kingsley as a proud Iranian general escaping the fall of the Shah to America. He hides his menial job from his family and buys a house from a young girl with a mixed up inheritance. Fantastic storyline.

Another Earth. Britt Marling, cost $30,000 and another great storyline. Parallel Earth's and you really believe it. Like Paranormal Activity, low budget but well directed.

A Month in the Country. Colin Firth's and Natasha Richardson's first film I believe. They were so young. I have a crisp CD still in its original case. Only played once as it is very rare. Copies for £10 on Amazon.

Is it rare? I have a DVD I bought new on eBay for much less than £10 last year, immediately after reading the book.

GuyMontag · 03/08/2022 23:20

What sort of films do you like though?

Eg

Y tu mama tambien
Pan's Labyrinth
City of God
Morvern Callar
Somers Town

These are some films I like that are on Amazon. I mean I think they're all really good thought provoking and absorbing films but you might not have the same taste as me.

GuyMontag · 03/08/2022 23:23

AHERM Colin Firth's first film was Another Country ACTUALLY.

Weirdly, I have it on video (yes, video!) I don't think it's worth any money though lol.

Most copies are rerun so not originals. Mine also has a diamond studded case, has been signed by the Pope and has a Sasquatch hair embedded in the sleeve.

Doesn’t count. It was a shit film actually.

GuyMontag · 03/08/2022 23:34

Aww, I like it. Great cast too - Rupert Everett, Colin Firth, Cary Elwes. And it won an award at Cannes.

There you go OP. Watch a tiny budget film from 35 years ago, loosely based on the early life of Guy Burgess. It was quite the thing in the 80s but largely forgotten now. Bit like me!
