London 'Family' Houses on TV

Non Londoner, living outside of London here. DH parents live in London in a non posh (downright scruffy when they moved in, normal family DH Mum Dr recep, dad a cabby, older parents, 4 kids in 2 double and box room 3bed) former outside London area, which has been poshed up a bit (coffee shops, high street stores etc have replaced the 'old functional' shops. Yet, when I watch tv shows like Outnumbered, Motherland, My Family, everyone seems to live in massive houses with gardens in places like Chiswick and Wimbledon, am I right in thinking that this would be impossible for non-millionaires?

My neck of the woods is not really shown on TV, with the exception of Cutting it and Coronation Street, but when it is, it seems a bit more realistic. Why is London always presented in such an unrealistic way for 'normal families'? or am I wrong? Do families live like that more frequently than I realise?

Apparently U.S. programmes are the same, i.e. using millionaire type properties for families in normal jobs.

However, the best one at the moment is the huge house Gray bought in EastEnders - despite him not being a particularly senior solicitor - and then, when he refused to pay the mortgage once jailed, the payments were taken over by Chelsea - who works part time at the club - and Whitney - another one selling cheap clothes at the market.

I'm in the North Midlands so not that familiar with the London housing market but feel sure that house would be worth a £million plus.

Clearly over thinking, but surely the Eastenders suburb (walford?) and should have gentrified by now? They have a tube station - why isn’t it all coffee shops and Gastropubs? (Or maybe it is, last time I watch martine mcthingy was leaving Grant(?) - it’s been a while!)

I think there are still bits of East London with tube access that are not particularly gentrified. Places like Plaistow or Manor Park are relatively unchanged in character.

Cold Feet was filmed in my part of Manchester, as were all the recent Harlan Coben adaptations on Netflix, a detective thing and a sitcom. All in the same quarter of a square mile. During lockdown you could barely move for tv crews.

@TammyOne

In the Split, they wouldn't have bought mid 90s

They were kids

How old are the characters meant
To be?
