I'm sure I remember when theme parks allowed guests not going on rides a much cheaper entry ticket. Why can't they bring these back?
Only my daughter wants to go to theme parks and enjoy the rides, the rest of the family don't enjoy the rides, but I won't let her go on her own.

I'd guess the management of it would be more than its worth - they already pay ride operators minimal wages, you can then put it on them to tackle who then should or shouldn't be going on rides.

How old is your dd? If secondary school age why not just send her in with a friend?

Well a simple solution to that would be a stamp on the hand or a paper band around the wrist for those who are allowed on the ride

They do this at Tivoli in Copenhagen.

You get a different wrist band depending on what package you've paid for to get in, gardens only, gardens plus most rides, or gardens plus all rides + photo pass.

I seem to remember they used to do 'Gardens only' at Alton Towers but don't know how they monitored it.

Theme parks are expensive to run. There’s absolutely no incentive to them to offer discounted tickets to people. Would be nice, but they’re not community focused, they’re profit focused.

Being the only one to go on rides is rubbish, though - can’t you take her with a friend, instead of the rest of the family who don’t fancy it?

I agree DH is taking the kids to a theme park at the weekend but I get pretty sick on them now (gutted used to be able to do loads of rides!)

I took ds last week to our local one which is smaller than the big theme parks but free entry for all and you just buy a wristband or tickets for rides. Perfectly civilised and manageable.

I think they just did garden only tickets at Alton towers at times of year when rides weren’t open

Because then they would make less money.

00100001 · 03/08/2022 19:45

Because why would they charge (say) £5 for an adult to wander around not riding, when they can charge £35 for the same thing?

Antarcticant · 03/08/2022 19:48

As pps have said, they make more money not doing so. My understanding is that there's no shortage of visitors to British theme parks, so there is no reason for them to offer cheap deals to entice visitors.

Blackpool pleasure beach used to do this, you just walked in and then paid for a wristband or tokens for individual rides. They stopped doing it because it was attracting pickpockets, and people loitering and causing trouble. Nobody gets in without paying for a wristband now.

cptartapp · 03/08/2022 19:55

I think Blackpool Pleasure Beach only charge a fiver for non riders.
Unless it's changed?

cptartapp · 03/08/2022 19:55

X post. Shows when I last went to Blackpool.

Blackpool used to charge a nominal fee of around £7.50 if you were just walking around and not going on rides. This was excellent for me as I can't go on any rides. They stopped it during covid times, I suppose to recoup the lost money they would have made.

It sucks to have to pay a fortune just to walk around or stand and wait for others to have their go on the rides.
