If she's under 16 then don't let her get acrylics or gel nails!! Stick with basic polish.

I became allergic to the family of meth acrylates found in acrylics, gel nails (inc. Shellac) and nail glue.

Unfortunately, it means that I now can't have certain medical and dental procedures that also contain this substance, so it can limit future medical treatments.

The training undertaken by the vast majority of nail techs does not cover this and so they will tell you it's perfectly safe, because they genuinely believe it to be.

You also cannot assume that because it was ok initially you won't become allergic at a future date. My Consultant Dermatologist told me that the younger you are when you start using these products, it increases the risk of becoming allergic.

I think adults are welcome to take the risk if they choose to, but it seems wrong to me to subject a child to it.

I really had no idea that you could be allergic to it!
Shes 14 and has asked for it herself, paying out of her own money- i dont think im subjecting her to it

What do you mean by cheap?

A decent place, that won't wreck her nails, (nails by ya gal or doll parts) that'd be £40 at least. They also usually need booking weeks in advance.

Fair enough, this article might be useful.

Or try looking on Treatwell, you can filter by treatment (Shellac/Gelish etc) and location and also see the salons star rating.

PinkChaires · 03/08/2022 19:20

What is the difference between gel/shellac/acrylic? Is one better than the other? Do they allow for nail art which is what she really wants? Trying to research before i give her the ok!

Please don't go to a cheap mail place - the people working there are quite possibly trafficked

Gel is more like a traditional polish that is cured under a UV/LED light. The nail is prepped; shaped, cuticle work, dehydrated then a base coat, usually 2 colour coats and a top coat. All cured for between 1-2 minutes under the lamp. Removed with acetone.

Acrylics are false nails. Again, nail is prepped; usually cut down, most places now use tips that are glued on to your own nails (it’s rare to find anywhere that does sculpting now), the acrylic powder is then mixed with a liquid and painted on, it hardens on contact with air, you can then have colours designs painted on. Most places use gel for this, which is then cured as above.

Acrylics need infills every 2-3 weeks as they grow out. Gel needs removing/redoing at about the same frequency.

Personally, acrylics are all that work for me. Gelish/Shellac/Geleration/Gel Bottle all chip/peel, despite claims that they don’t. TBF, my mums never do, I must just have crap nails.

20 quid will barely get a plain gel nail. Decent nail art is time consuming and expensive.

Tisfortired · 03/08/2022 19:38

I like Janea Nails off Deansgate.

PinkChaires · 03/08/2022 19:42

Thank you! Am i right in thinking that gel polish is not as damaging and you can do nail art on it like the picture above?

It isn’t as damaging as acrylics and yes, a decent nail tech should be able to do nail art.

Tisfortired · 03/08/2022 21:19

I had gel nails and nail art done Janea (it was just two nails) and sure I paid around £30.

thetombliboo · 03/08/2022 21:22

I actually had a really nice gel manicure in a very similar colour by chance at the Arndale centre. On the upper floor there was a small drop in nail booth.
