Anyone know how to talk to a dog in Greek? (Not google translate)

Anyone know how they say sit, leave, get down etc in Greece? The google translate versions are falling on deaf ears so I’m wondering if there are alternative phrases commonly used. We’ve got 2 Greek rescue dogs who seem fantastically trained in some ways (sit beautifully for a lead etc) so I’m thinking they know the basics just that we don’t know the right words.

Aww, I have a Greek rescue 😊

Sit is Kat-se or Kat-se kato (sit down)

Leave is As-se, As-se afto

Get down = Kato

Stay = Mi - ne

You have to say it quite forceful to sound authentic 😂

And no is oxi, oh-hee

Try using hand signals.....if they've had training the previous owners may have used a visual signal too.

I was going to suggest hand signals too. My Balkan rescue knew those.

@Studyafter40 perfect thank you!

@Changenameobviousreasons good shout, I’ve ‘found’ 2 so far.

My main thing is I need them to stop/sit/pack it the fuck in when they take off after a cat/mouse/squirrel…

Are they a pointer mix? The prey drive is often stronger than any owner commands unfortunately.

Changenameobviousreasons · 02/08/2022 20:19

The word may not important but the tone should be. Also, for stop try forcefully and loudly saying it with your arm in the air and a flat palm (think policeman.) you need to get their attention and for them to look at you, even briefly, to see the signal. Sit is normally hand flat in front of you, palm up - as if you're balancing something.

If it's any consolation, I have a very much English speaking dog that does a wonderful line in selective deafness and stubbornness occasionally (mastiff) - doesn't ignore the signals though generally.

@Studyafter40 Setters, listing said they were cat friendly (important here) but they’re not.

@Changenameobviousreasons that works a treat for the jumping up, doesn’t work when they’re racing away.

Lol already got fixated on tiny fluffy things so you're far too boring. If you have 2 of them, I feel your pain! We had 2 rescue GSD'S who used to egg each other on with squirrels!

Studyafter40 · 02/08/2022 20:42

As soon as the ears prick up and they are about to chase, make a 'tssss' sound by putting your tongue behind your top teeth and then blowing air through. Do it really hard and repeatedly. Many Greeks do this to distract dogs or tell them off. It works well with mine when he's about to chase pigeons off the bird table.

Studyafter40 · 02/08/2022 20:42

Also a strong "Eh, Malaka!" can work wonders 😂
