What does a 16 year old need to take to the Reading festival?

GnightMaryEllen · 02/08/2022 17:48

It's our 16 year olds first music festival and he will be camping there for 2 or 3 nights with dozens more from his school year.
We, his parents, have never been to a festival like this before either so not sure what or how much stuff to bring.
We'll be dropping him off by car.
Does anyone know how far it is to walk to the campsite?
Obviously he will be taking a tent, sleeping mat and sleeping bag.
Also clothes, toilet tissue, torch, cash, phone charging pack.
What else should he take?
Are you allowed take food and liquids into a festival like this?
How much clothes should he take?
Anything else?
TIA

I took food, a camping stove and couple of pans, hand gel and baby wipes, a small deodorant and some of your own toilet roll. There's more but I can't remember

BlueSkyWarmSea · 02/08/2022 17:55

Wellington boots!

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 02/08/2022 17:55

Food
Drink
Hand sanitiser
Loo roll
Toothbrush
Method of payment
Tent
Sleeping bag

He won't wash or properly change clothes for the couple of days, he'll be weeing in bushes and eating/drinking whatever he can afford from the food vans but some lightweight snacks are good just to top him up.

You'll need a change of shoes in the car for pickup and a cover on your seats cos he'll likely be muddy it always seems to rain and he'll stink.

As sad as it is I'd recommend a padlock for the tent door. Lots of thefts unfortunately. Otherwise lots of snacks (loads of food there but very expensive), a really good head torch, those flags on telescopic poles are really handy for identifying your tent amid the millions, portable chargers, wet wipes, bin bags, refillable water bottle.

Darlissima · 02/08/2022 19:50

Sadly padlocking your tent can just get it cut open instead. Better just to be sure there’s nothing in there worth taking.

Loo roll, wipes, snacks. At 16 I’d assume they’re buying most of their food rather than trying to cook (expensive though). My recollection is that you can take food and drink into the camping area but not the main area but do check that. Glass is generally not allowed anywhere and obviously no knives etc.

We away used to take a couple of Imodium before we went to avoid having to poo in the minging loos but I’m not sure this is medically approved 😂

Something warm, it might be hot during the day but it can be cold at night.

I like to take a picnic blanket or camping chair but I am older than 16.

Paracetamol for hangovers.

Cash/card - it's expensive eating out and drinking.

TrueNorthernBird · 02/08/2022 19:53

What everyone else has said.

Plus condoms.

HedyPrism · 02/08/2022 19:55

Snacks that won't melt and will survive heat. E.g. peanuts, gingernut biscuits.
Sunhat
Beanie hat
Suncream
Paracetamol
Earplugs

Blackdiame · 02/08/2022 19:55

Do not take a padlock that's just an invitation to get robbed. Padlocks are useless for a nylon tent.

Ratched · 02/08/2022 19:57

Money and baby wipes.

Nowt else will get used😁

YellowHpok · 02/08/2022 19:57

I think you need to have a very frank discussion with them about personal safety. Have you ever been to Leeds festival? I am a very experienced festival worker and I wouldn't let a 16 year old go personally.

Fire safety, alcohol safety, personal safety, safe sex, recovery position, how to contact home if/when all their personal belongings are stolen/set on fire etc

JorisBonson · 02/08/2022 19:58

Majority of festivals now are cashless, so no need for that.

As many wet wipes / bum wipes as he can carry.

Big bottles of water for the tent.

JorisBonson · 02/08/2022 19:58

@YellowHpok is the fire thing still going at Reading?? I last went about 20 years ago and it was a thing then!

C8H10N4O2 · 02/08/2022 19:59

Condoms
And the pep talk to use them.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 02/08/2022 20:00

Card more than cash, most places are cashless now, and you can top it up

goldfinchonthelawn · 02/08/2022 20:04

Baby wipes
sun screen
loo roll
hand sanitiser
paracetamol

sunglasses
sunhat/cap
portable phone charger
emergency foil blanket
pillow
sleeping bag
bin bag

megletthesecond · 02/08/2022 20:05

A bit of common sense.

CassTheFox · 02/08/2022 20:09

The good thing about Reading (as opposed to Glastonbury) is that the festival site is very near the town centre. It’s very easy to get off site in the mornings and into town to buy any supplies you might need, and get a decent breakfast!

A small torch is handy for finding your way back to your tent at night, if you don’t want to drain your mobile battery

Lordofmyflies · 02/08/2022 20:13

I'd get him a money belt to wear under his trousers and use it to carry phone ,cards and emergency numbers. Tents are often cut into so padlocks are useless. Leave nothing that he does mind replacing in the tent. I personally, wouldn't let my 16 year old go either..he has to wait until he's 18.

HedyPrism · 02/08/2022 20:13

I see you asked about clothes.
One t-shirt for each day.
Two bottoms in case one set gets soaked in something unspeakable.
Socks / underwear etc
Hoodie or jumper
Waterproof poncho.
Sunhat plus beanie hat for nighttime.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 02/08/2022 20:15

Wellies, wet wipes, phone and charger pack, torch, snacks, drinks. When I went you could take drinks into campsite but not arena

feellikemyselfagain · 02/08/2022 20:16

Bin bags and a money belt with emergency cash inside!

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 02/08/2022 20:16

Some kind of light raincoat, hoody, hand sanitizer

sunflowerandivy · 02/08/2022 20:16

Forget camping stove. They're not going to want to cook!
As an avid festival goer they need:
Wellies
Flip flops
Fleece all in one for night
Sleeping bag
Eye mask
Loads of socks and underwear
Baby wipes +++
Loo roll +++
Milton wipes (for toilet seats)
Waterproof trousers
Waterproof coat / poncho
Some kind of bum bag thing for essentials
Rehydration sachets
Paracetamol and ibuprofen
Small first aid kit
I always take my SIM card out of my smart phone and put it in an old phone. Battery lasts longer and it doesn't matter if lost.
Small bills £5/£10.
£150 minimum spending money
Condoms (sorry but they're 16!)

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 02/08/2022 20:18

I went to a festival at the weekend and some places were struggling to get a signal so wanted cash. I agree Leeds is the roughest one of them all but I went and I'm a right wimp Grin
