Room with no skirting boards

Hi folks,

Doing a few rooms up, lifting floors and putting down new ones, looked into replacing skirting and it's crazy money, way outside of our budget- anyone not have skirting in their house/rooms??? Really just wondering how it would look? Is it noticeable??? If that makes sense!

Thanks

3Kids

I can't say I've ever seen one with no skirting boards. Floors usually need some sort of expansion gap unless they are tiles and the skirting covers this. Maybe a strip of beading at least?

Our loft extension doesn't have skirting boards (like that when we bought the house) where the carpet meets the walls and I think it looks really noticeable, we're just working our way through our renovation list before getting to sorting it out

It’s the kind of thing you could do slowly though, when budget allows?

From memory, lots of new houses in New Zealand don't have skirting boards (i lived there for a long time). The floor just meets the wall. Looks great when the walls are perfectly straight and the floor is perfectly straight.

Yes Kf, I think your probably right this is probably the most sensible option albeit a slow process

That makes sense Flurry, we will have to have them I'd say as that big between floor and wall isn't that well finished

How much do you have to do? It looks like you can get unpainted pine for under £2m. If you look around then there will be cheaper. It's easy to install?

The bottom of the wall would red to be perfect, which even with new plaster boards and skimming, it seldom is. Plus you would need to be careful when vacuuming or mopping, I tend to crash in to them when I vac and I’ve a steam mop so I’d be wary about getting the wall steamed. We’ve got tiled skirting boards that match the floor tiles.

I did mine my self the timber merchants cut and delivered it it was straightforward

Our house is modern architect designed with no skirting. It looks great with this style but you do get cracks at the join of wall and floor. And it would look odd in a different style of house.

Go to a timber merchant and take what's on special offer

Skirting boards protect the base of the (soft) plaster from being knocked by furniture and activity (e.g. vacuuming)

That sounds lovely Yorkie

Dh has been to the timber merchants and they've nearly tripled the price of everything since we started doing our renovations but it looks like our only option really as previous poster said our house isn't a modern recently designed house so the no skirting would probably look out of place
